just installed my msi z170a with skaylake cpu, corsair vengeance 2x4gb dual channel kit

installed everything, no output to monitor, so I took 1 stick of ram out and it worked

put 2nd stick in place of the other one to test it works, worked

put 2nd stick back in, nothing again

manual says to use DIMM slots 2 and 4, but that doesn't work, I tried slots 1 and 2 and that works ? is the correct of is the manual wrong?

try 1 and 3

should work in 3 and 4 for dual channel mode, right now your in single channel with it in slot 1 and 2

ive only just got it, so not updated bios, so no idea if its latest version or not

I have an msi z170A Gaming Pro
Corsair Vengeance LPX 24000C15 30000MHz

thanks for your help

More likely a typo in manual. If you have only 2 sticks then you should installed in slot 1 and 3 then when buy extra 2 sticks and these should installed in slot 2 and 4.

No - I've used MSI and Asus boards recently (past couple years) who want you to install in slots 2 and 4 first.

As for why, I remember reading that it's handier in instances where a cooler blocks the first slot. So makes sense.

Past 2 years? Try 15 years since DDR launched.

I been done installed memory sticks in ASUS, ECS, Gigabyte and MSI motherboards slot 1 and 3 over the last 15 years. Never had a cooler blocked the first slot, of course you can moved to slot 2 and 4 if cooler blocked slot 1.

I'll say it in a different way so you can understand - the primary dual channel on many motherboards, especially recent ones, now consists of slots 2 and 4 by default. And the secondary dual channel (for when you add more sticks) consists of 1 and 3.

Does the memory work in and 1 and 3 if you put it in them first anyway? Yes, in most cases. It's just not the primary dual channel.

So no typo involved.
