Confused. Why buy an FX60?

I read you threads about buying opteron 146 to clock at the speed of an FX60, but for the fraction of the cost.
However, if I was to consider spending £800 on a CPU, would it not make sense to go for the opteron 154 for the same price and clock it to (146=2Ghz OC'ed 50% = 3Ghz / 154=2.8Ghz OC'ed 50% = 4.2Ghz). Surely this makes it the best CPU around.

who says you can get a 50% OC on anything?
Also, the FX-60 is dual core, like having 2 FX55's in one cpu. The nearest competitor would be the 4800+ X2.
I would personally buy a 170 opteron which is dual core and clock it.

also you can't really compare an unOC'd fx60 to an OC'd anything, the fx60 is multi unlocked.... they should be pretty good clockers, so while it'll be fairly simple to clock things to the stock speed, they may be capable of a lot more

still they are very expensive

edit == oh yeah sorry 'bout the sig, was right in the middle of experimenting with it, you saw a proto type ;)

Is the whole point not that people will buy the FX60 and clock it to make it go quicker?
It's all very well saying that you will clock something to FX60 speeds, but I very much doubt that people who buy such an extreme cpu are going to leave it at stock.

You want the best, you pay for it, simple as that...

because nobody says it'll do 4.2ghz:confused: when was the last time you say any a64 do 3.5ghz on air?
Dont start that james, before we know it we'll have somebody saying they can get their 1.6 celeron to 5.3 on a stock cooler and a 120Watt psu.
By the way, isnt it about time you changed your sig, its so 2004.

Its not new for the FX series to be so expensive so I dont get what all the fuss is about the FX 60.

The FX 55 ,57 were all expensive.

I mean the best bet would be to get a opteron 170 and clock it but if you dont overclock, are rich and want the best cpu around then get the FX60.

Or if you are rich and you want the best Overclocking chip arround get the FX60!

The FX60 is going to be a beast, its not unlikely to hit similar clocks to an FX 57, meaning with the right cooling 3.5Ghz + would be possible, i havent seen any dual core reach that speed yet.

Personally im not jumping on that wagon, iv had an FX53 and 55 in the past but have since decided they arent really worth the premium you pay, if i was to spend that sort of money on a CPU(s) id go for a dual Operton 275 rig and overclock that. Dual Dual Core, just has to be a good thing.

yeah it's an 8 way SMP proccesor so I think they guess your "rich" enough to hace an 8 Cpu system.

Not exactly average home pc.

is that 8 physical CPUs, or is it 4 CPUs each with dual core, as you can now get that 4 CPU/8way setup for home PCs now, ok they're ment for servers, but they're standard 8way enabled dual core opterons which if you could overclock them (i doubt tyan server bords alow this) you technicaly have 8 FX 57s

but you can only get dual CPU and Dual core systems at the moment with SLi, so you can have 4 cores (must be 8 way enabled i think) and 2 GPUs in the one system

My Tyan only allows me to change the memory. I use Nvidia Ntune to increase the CPU clock speed.

On another note I can fit 800 (Socket 940) series CPU's to the board, but WHY?
