Confuzzled. Which "high end" GPU set-up?

For the £1000 it would cost to get 2 GTX580's Lighting "extreme" you could get a 6990 and a 6950/70 for trifire for less money. There was review on [H] comparing these two set ups some time ago and the results were interesting.

Even though I prefer AMD cards I would have to say the 2x 3GB GTX580 setup would be the better choice if you have the money. It's not great value but the performance would certainly be excellent. Quad-Crossfire reduces the micro-stuttering but doesn't scale particularly well.

However, I have to agree with the previous posts - now is not a good time to upgrade. It would be best to make do, or simply buy a temporary card, and see what happens with AMD's upcoming launch. It may be that they release the mid-range cards first, though it should still have an impact upon the price of existing cards and will give a good indication of how the top-end cards will perform.

Exactly, I belive this is the sli/tri/quad results on toms...

Tri fire wins hands down. Sure you get higher frame rates with quad but look at the micro stutter results... tri fire really looks like the way to go if you want high frame rates AND smooth play.
