I have a passat 1.8t (2001), and i would like to connect my ipod via the headunit (VW standard), ive tried cassette adaptors and fm tuners in the past, and the quality is horrid to say the least.
Ive come across the 'dension unit', and it sounds promising. Anyone know if this sounds like cd quality?, halfords have said they will charge to have it fitted all inclusive of £150..
any good?, do i have any other options...

I use 2 ipod adaptors, clarion line in on my starlet and the alpine ai unit..

Neither sound cd quality as the music is rarely cd quality....

Both are about as good as it gets tho, and a lot better than FM/casette adaptors...

The ice>link plus uses the cd changer interface I believe, so if you have a cd changer, this will have to be removed unless the HU supports 2 changers. But the sound is line in, and should be as good as it can get with that stereo...

Having said that for £200 you can get the alpine system with ai unit, which will probably sound better... and free fitting at halfrauds

:D

i quite like the original vw headunit, i see where your coming from by adding another £50 and investing in something else. But im looking to keep it simple, which is why im keen on the dension icelinl, but not too keen on the £150 pricetag :D

ive just had a look at that unit, cant really see whats so special, and differnt from my vw original?
also cant see how i would connect the ipod..extra cost?

You buy the ipod adapter for it which means the HU will control the ipod, much better and safer solution tbh.

All depends if you want to spend the cash, i'm sure you can find it cheaper on the bay as well perhaps in a HU / IPOD Adapter package deal.

The VW adaptor (ice>link plus) already controls the ipod from the HU....

It uses it as a pseudo cd changer

:D

FM modulator, with a 2 phono to 3.5mm lead, from the well known high street electronics store. FM modulator to give you the aux inputs into the head unit using the ariel.

Alpine is definately the best solution imo. I looked heavily into this and ended up with an Alpine (obviously Pioneer etc are include, I just prefered the Alpine).

The standard VW HU will not come close to even one of the entry level Alpine headunits in terms of quality :)

P.s Rip your music at the highest quality possible, sounds great imo :)

You want one of those mate, the next generation of ipod ready headunits.

The new CDE-9850Ri CD/MP3 player with Full Speed Connection for iPod works via a simple cable that directly links to an iPod without a bulky hideaway box. The Full Speed Connection capability lets the user control their iPod through the head unit, with the experience being more like directly interfacing with the iPod itself. Enhanced features include 200 percent faster data transmission for quick and easy file navigation, as well as full-tag artist, album, song and playlist information displayed directly on the head unit, all while charging the iPod battery even if the battery is fully depleted.

Alpine's exclusive Quick Search™ function allows for quick navigation by playlist, artist, album or song. It’s built in high power 50 Watts x4 amplifier ensures premium sound quality whether it be the iPod connected or playback of CD, MP3 or WMA files.
