Connection Timeouts

Every half an hour, seemingly on the half-hour/hour mark, my internet stops working entirely, but just mine, not my parents, who are connected through the same router.

Which leads me to believe that some program has gotten inside my computer, a nasty one of course.

Any ideas?

Shortage of magic smoke?

No, really. You're going to have to give us a bit more to work with...what type of internet connection you've got, what make/model of router you're using, who your ISP is for starters.

1mb ADSL w/ BT Yahoo, the router is a Mentor one, i'm not sure of the model at all, I didn't buy it.

Surely if it were my connection/router, the other comp would be affected too?

You didn't state if your computer is wireless or not.

Sounds quite an odd problem, if you were using a USB modem/dialup I would normally blame it on the idle timeout option but your on a router.

If you've got any firewalls on, ZoneAlarm or whatever I would for now disable it and enable Windows for the time being.

I assume you've done the Anti Virus scan, Spybot, HiJack This and Adware scan?

If wired try changing ethernet cables round? And have you tried a different LAN port (if you've got another knocking around)

I wouldn't blame the problem being his router and/or ISP, since the other machines are working fine only his has the problem.

I wasn't suggesting it was, just pointing out a suitable starting point for some information that the OP could give - since the first post was as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

What happens when the machine loses its internet connection - can it ping the router or the other machine and/or an IP on the internet? Any error messages? Does the network card still show up as connected? Does the output from ipconfig /all change?
(start, run, cmd, ping [name/IP address] - 212.58.224.35 = www.bbc.co.uk is as good as any)
