Lost!
I ordered a C2D E6300 a few days ago, now i've just read an article which says that its not a "proper" C2D chip but the older architecture?

So which is it, is it a new chip, or just a rebadged old one which intel's marketing people are conning us about?

But it says "Allendale core rather than being a fully-fledged Conroe core-based Core 2 Duo" - suggesting the other chips in the C2D range are proper ones, and this is a marketing con of an older core design slotted in for the low end?

The Core 2 Due has more than one version and over the coming years there'll be lots more versions of the Core 2 Duo. Have a look at the benchmarks for the E6300 and E6400 compared to the 4MB E6600 and E6700 - there isn't much difference when you consider the clock speed bump as well.

Dont worry the 6300 is the sweet chip in the C2D range that and the 6600.

enjoy it.

oh and clock it
:)

its not a conroe its an allendale the conroe is the higher perofming one these no difference apart from the cache

LOL!

Ok, i shant worry too much, i just hope that it arrives tomorrow the company (not ocuk - they were too expensive!) has already ballsed up my delivery as it was due today!

No, the E6300 and E6400 are Conroe's just with only 2MB cache enabled (the rest is there but not used) rather than the 4MB of the E6600 and E6700. The Allendale's (Q107) will run on the 800MHz bus and only have 2MB cache in total.

The next stepping of E6300, and E6400's might be true Allendales, I believe its L1 stepping, the main difference being Idle power consumption has been reduced from 22W, to 12.5W... Could be that the disabled part of the Conroe cache is still drawing power, and switching to a true Allendale gives them a reduced power requirement.

Possibly already being shipped by intel, but its a lottery for who gets which. Either way, it should clock just as well, or perhaps even better. Lower power = lower temperatures.

Anyway, Allendale is still part of the NGMA family which includes Conroe, and Woodcrest (Xeon) none of the Core 2 Duo's are based on an 'older' design they are just varients with slightly different specs and speeds.

Next year, there will even be chips with the Pentium name with NGMA based cores. (I believe the new pentiums will be single core processors, with low clock speeds)

This is interesting. These might be awseome for gamers if they o/c very well. (which i expect they would).

Seems rather strange to me for them to want to name processors based on the Core architecture "Pentium". Where is that information from? I think Core 2 Solo or something like that would be a more fitting name.

beats the hell out of me since intel has officially dumped the name "pentium" as of 2006. rest assured it wont be used again.

There are already Core2Solo chips available. And please don't forget that the 'core' architecture is not that dissimilar to that of the Pentium Pro.

i'm afraid you are wrong my friend, all current c2d chips available are conroe's! the new chips that will be out in 2007 are going to be codenamed Allendale, i have a 6400 and cpu-z even correctly idetifies it as a conroe ;)

I don't think there are Core 2 Solo chips available yet, are there? There are Core Solo chips which are actually dual core Yonah's with one processor disabled. Yonah is Conroe & Merom's predecessor.

Yes agreed, the range can trace its roots back to the Pentium Pro although they are far from just a faster version of it.

You could well be correct about the Core Solo, and I would also support your statement that the Core architecture shares heritage with the Pentium Pro rather than is an update of it.
