Not as cheap as many were predicting. In addition to have to pay £120 for the Conroe mobo another £120 needed for the first Conroe. Glad I didn't wait for them and went with the AM2 in my budget. Now, just need to sit back and watch the price wars start and pick up a nice CPU in 6 months time.

£120 for a mobo, where are you getting your prices from.

Well, considering the E6300 which has been overclocked to 2.6Ghz quite easily on air (Sorry no link) that pretty much beats a X2 3800+ overclocked plus its £50 cheaper. And with that £50 cheaper you can afford to spend that on a new motherboard ;).

Remember though, the 3800 x2 is going to be reduced to only around 99 pounds. This is perfect for people who are looking for a cheaper upgrade :)

Exactly, lot of bang for buck. In about 4 months I'll trade up on my week old 3500+ AM2 and hopefully get around £50 for it, so not a lot cash to get decent upgrade. Plus, I didn't have to wait around for months until Conroe came out.

I really dont think this will happen, I wish it will but I doubt it. Reducing the x2 3800 to £99 would be a 50% price drop sounds very unlikely to me. 939 chips are going out of production soon as well.

Conroe prices are'nt that bad really. Remember how much the single core A64 cores were when they first came out. I paid £280 odd when i got my first A64 3400+ on 754 and that was after a price drop. Conroe is a damn sight faster than they were when they came out. Agreed there is a huge price difference between the 6600 and 6700 but the 6600 looks to be a good clocker.

As for having to buy a new mobo etc. Did'nt we have to do the same for A64 when it was released? If you want to upgrade you only have AM2 and Conroe now anyway so you would have to get all new whichever option you choose. 939 is no longer an option as it's as good as killed off now and you would be left with no upgrade path. That is exactly why i stuck with 754. Now all i have to do is wait until my rig no longer hacks it, which will not be for at least another year or so. Then i either go with Conroe or go AM2, by which time the 65nm chips will have been released and all the bugs will be eliminated from both routes.

Well the X2's arent getting a 50% drop.

This worked with conroe so ill try do it with these.

In us X2 3800+ costs £166
In uk X2 3800+ costs £211 (I chose retail because they are the retail prices)

Thats a 27% increase for UK.

Reduced prices:
In us X2 3800+ costs £92
In uk X2 3800+ costs £117

So these prices are pretty good however, you cannot compare the 3800+ to the E6300 because the E6300 owns it ;).

Remember Intel are dropping there prices too on there "old" chipsets.

Plus the "£120 for a mobo" thing doesnt quite work until we have seen the full range of conroe motherboards available.

I'd personally spend the extra £30 for a system much more future proof and could last me an extra 6months ;).

TBH, this is the problem most people are having.

They already have 1 or 2 GB of DDR ram. So the problem that happens is that they now have to buy DDR2 ram.

Even if they have to upgrade from a 754:

X2 3800 around 100
Asrock Dual 40
2GB of ram 100.

So for 240 that is a nice system... for the Intel side though, th CPU is 140 (which is priced GREAT) the motherboard is going to be at least 80 - 100, plus the ram is another 100.

So its around another 80 on top... if they already have the board or ram though, it makes things very cheap with the X2.

The performance of Conroe isnt in question however.

^^ Well not necessarily when there are fairly capable DDR1 based LGA775 boards £50 and under that take dual core 8xx's and 9xx's :)

Right now you could just as well:
Pentium D 930: £125
Asus P5RD1-VM or any similar LGA775 board: £45
2GB Ram: £100
Total: £270

I'm not arguing your point. All I'm doing is saying that LGA775 based upgrades can be done on the cheap too :)

And tbh dark angel, that £80 extra is going to give you a much better machine which is going to last longer and works out better overall IMO.

Guys, pleaseeeee dont misunderstand me.

I am not a AMD fan, or an intel fan. And its obvious that the Conroe IS a better choice, but some people will opt for the 3800 X2 simply because it will be a far cheaper upgrade for them.

TBH, I am far more tempted to go conroe myself.

As for motherboards, tbh you have me at an advantage. I thought that only the latest motherboards being released now are able to support the Conroe?

However if you already have a 939 system with say a A64 3000, 3200 or 3500 then the reduced price X2's are your best option. Ok so your not getting Core 2 performance but then again you only need to buy a CPU for £150 rather than a motherboard and new RAM too.

That was the point I was trying to make.

Obviously if you need to buy everything, you are better to put the extra towards it and grab a better system though :)

as much as i'd love to have a conroe setup, money wise it simply isnt feasible. this DDR2 malarky is the biggest problem for AMD users.

at least now AMD have gone DDR2 on the AM2 so next year maybe intel will see a big increase in sales when people feel like moving to DDR2.

ill stick with my 939 setup and get a 3800 when theyre cheap.
