Considering buying a console...

You can just buy an access point for £30. Why on earth people pay £60 for the inferior official adaptor I don't know.

It's not inferior, it's a/b and g banded for a start, it connects into the console, it has fantastic range (far better than my PC, Wii, PSP, DS Lite or PS3) and it's small.

N is far superior to all of those. Better range than a handheld device would be expected of even the worst wireless adaptor so thats hardly suprising, if it's far better than your pc then you need a better card. Though I suppose, at 3x the cost of a pci card you would expect it to be better. ;)

I was merely commenting in comparison to a £30 adaptor.

I am using 2 different wireless cards, one a linksys card, the other is on my ASUS motherboard. Same results on both. Oh yeah, and on the other 4 computers in the house.

Sorry to maybe take this OT but instead of buying the official MS wireless jobbie you can just use a standard (USB?) one? I am looking (trying to convince myself) to buy a 360 (cheaper than PS3, that's the bottom line) and I was keen to look at the wireless capabilities.. I have a 100% spare Linksys USB adaptor sat at home so if that can be used it would be a real bonus! Something like this one:
Satellite

Also, I take it buying a Core system is not the right thing (newb!) so a Premium pack is in order? Good deals and any idea on what price I should be paying (they vary soooo much!)

EDIT: Is "Xbox 360 Premium with Sega Rally and PGR 3 and Extra Wireless Controller and Live Arcade (Xbox 360)" for £289.99 a good deal?

I'm not entirely sure if that would work, I'm an official adaptor user, but I know several users here do use one. As it's USB I would assume that it would work.

In regards to that offer, I'm not entirely sure tbh. I can't see Sega Rally staying at full-retail for long, PGR3 is worth around £10 as is Live Arcade. The Wireless controller is pretty good. However, I'm pretty sure you could find a better deal if you looked around.
Are there any games in particular you are looking for?

This wont work. You need one that has an ethernet connection to the 360. how these devices work is that the host device (360) only sees an ethernet connection and the adapter bridges this to its own wireless interface to connect to your Access Point. It is a cheaper solution than the offical one, but messier as you have an ethernet cable going from your 360 to the ethernet/wireless bridge and you have seperate power for the device as well.

Off the top of my head this one from OcUk is what you are looking for:

You can get ones that draw power from a USB port , so you could have it plugged in to the network port and USB on the back of the 360 without the need for another external power supply.

Something like http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=12&l2=41&l3=0&l4=0&model=1710&modelmenu=1

I've got an older versioin of that and it comes with a lead to run it off a usb port plus you get all the other modes it does as well , handy sometimes if you need to get a computer on your wireless network quickly without faffing around trying to get wireless drivers installed and working. Not tried it on my 360 though as that is within easy cable reach of the router I have. But it does what you suggest and acts as a wireless ethernet device without the need for additional drivers.

Well no, it's the fact that the PS3 is too much puts it straight out of mind really.

Not really into FPS, more driving and the like so Sega Rally (my fave on the Saturn!) and PGR4 are available it kinds of swings the balance a bit! And some Fifa..

Fair enough, thanks for the reply - not that I'm doubting your word, but the thing that got me thinking is the standard MS wireless jobbie is USB?

Of course, I bow to experienced words, just something that got me thinking!!

Microsoft don't use an open system. It already has the drivers for the official USB wireless adaptor, however it doesn't allow a plug and play for anything. This is why there are so few 3rd party peripherals for the Xbox360 (you have to pay MS money to license their technology).

Cool, I see - thanks for the explanation.. makes sense for them to protect their interests I suppose.

Hmm, a little look at the funds is in order and a little more price browsing ;)
