Hey all,

Let me explain the situation as I'm sure many are in the same boat.

Currently on an "iPhone35" tariff on O2. This expires in Jan 2010.
  • iPhone35
  • 18 month contract
  • £35/month
  • 600 mins, 500 SMS
  • Unlimited web and Wi-Fi to The Cloud hotspots

Now.. there is a Simplicity tariff on O2 costing a lot less which has perked my interest.
  • Simplicity
  • 1 month contract
  • £19.58/month
  • 600 mins, 1200 SMS
  • Any bolt-on you require*
*You can choose an unlimited web bolt-on (no Wi-Fi)

Now, I'm mainly concerned about the FUP on the web bolt-on. I know the iPhone tariffs have an unlimited usage (within reason) but I can't find any definitive numbers for the Simplicity. If it's the same deal: i.e. no real limits, just a FUP then I'll gladly save £15 a month :D

See any problems in the logic here? The contract costs less, has more messages and only runs for 1 month so it's easy to end.

It's exactly the same, no limit just a FUP. I'm doing the same but in reverse (kind of), currently on a normal contract with unlimited web and have ordered a payg iphone to use on it.

Vodafone have a similar plan, but now your phone can be officially unlocked I'd go with that to be honest.

They do 600 minutes, unlimited texts and mobile internet for £20/month on a 30 day contract, or 900 minutes for the same price on a 12 month contract. Both have cashback available and Vodafone's 3G network is much better than O2's.

The above is most certainly what I'll be doing until the 4th generation iPhone appears.

Appreciate the reply but I'd never use 1200 messages as it is!!

Also, in the future I may want to get O2 broadband so I'll stick with O2 as it'll work out cheaper.

That's not to say that if Vodafone have a rave review I wouldn't change.. it's only a 30 day contract

Cheers all!

Question is - how much do you use the phone?

I'm on pay as you go and still have about £20 after a £30 top up - most of my cost is SMS to arrange a meet up :)

The normal monthly contract web bolt on has a fair usage policy of 200mb a month (based on a 'normal' users usage according to the letter I recieved from o2). Go over this once and get a text and a letter, go over it again and they'll review your current deal 'and O2 will look to move you to a more appropriate deal'.

FUP - Fair usage policy

Hmmmm my research suggests otherwise. Is that with a simplicity (online) tariff?

Im 90% certain this has been debunked by O2 staff on here. I use a lot of data every month, even tethering my laptop and I've never been pulled up.

200mb was my understanding. Not simplicity - I have a normal 18month monthly contract with web bolt-on (using it in a pay and go iphone) - and recently received a text and letter from o2 stating the above.

However, searching the web I can't find a definitive answer and the O2 website is next to useless.

I did the exact same as you, I switched to the simplicity package with my iphone and havent received any FUP warnings over the past 6-8 months I've had it.

I use my O2 Simplicity internet bolt-on all the time on my Winmo phone and have never had any warnings. I no longer worry at all about usage.

Fair enough, in my experience Vodafone's network is far superior to O2's, especially when it comes to 3G coverage!

Yeah, I think I've discovered the cause of confusion.

Normal web bolt on (200MB)
Simplicity "unlimited" web bolt on (FUP)*

*It's only available online.

same, with voda the 500meg limit was set in stone, also I've found o2's 3g to be better for me.
plus i got quidco on my simplicity 12month contract, effectivly paying for 5 months.

sorry to hijack, i may be in the same position come 6weeks time, i have a O2 Iphone 3G which im more than happy with and thinking about going to simplicity when my contract runs out which will port my number.

my aim is to go for the 4th Gen Iphone when it it released. would i be able to "upgrade" from simplicity to iphone 4th gen when it is released and port my number? or would i have to sign up for new contract and port my number that way?

This may shed a little light (or just muddy the waters):

Seems 200mb is a 'fair' usage and prehaps 1gb is 'excessive' usage. Not sure there's any difference between normal web bolt-on and simplicity. Just different interpretations of the rules by different O2 customer service reps - and even differences between O2 terms and conditions and those stated on other vendor websites (e.g. CPW)

I have the unlimited web bolt on on my (non-Iphone) contract. From what I can glean from the bill, the cap is 10GB, which is more than my actual broadband.

The bill shows the amount used at 0GB every month, with the amount unused always being around about 9.5GB. I'd guess that I'm using about 0.5GB each month, but that they aren't really counting anyway.

In short, I doubt you'll run into any trouble. O2 are actually one of the best for "unlimited" web, which is ironic considering that their 3G coverage is pretty poor.
