Console Converts

Hand up here. Bought the XSX on release, a PS5 a few months later and I’ve barely gamed on my PC since. The convenience, the comfort, the lack of hassle, the equivalent tech. This was the generation for me to make the switch.

Can totally absorb this sentiment. My original gaming buddy from the wow days been off PC gaming for about 5 years now, he's PS die hard now, his kids have all grown up - living the console dream!

As I added, you have to remember enthusiast forums like these can give a false impressions that everyone got one, but you have to remember many enthusiasts will go out of thier way to do considerably more to get one than the average gamer, and there are plenty of people here who didn't get one either; despite wanting them. Yes, there was more demand than previously due to COVID etc, but the amount of people who got one compared to the number of gamers who would have bought had the normal range of models been available...lets just say it'd have been considerably higher. I watched many of the FE drops, and saw how quickly they sold out. If you think most people got one of those; especially outside of the biggest enthusiasts... I suspect in the wider market, there are just as many pre-built sourced Ampere cards out there, as FE, likely many more.

The poll you refer to here was also only 200 people roughly, and reference design (which would include many prebuilts) also fell under the FE category. If you don't think there are more than 200 people here who'd normally have bought one, you've not seen previous GPU launches or paid much attention to numbers :)

Needless to say, I think if the wider gamer population who'd traditionally upgrade with a new gen was somehow surveyed in entirety; the larger pool would be 'not able to attain one'/'not able to attain one at reasonable price'!, 3080's have been especially bad.

This in itself, between pricing and availability, and the spec bump on the new consoles, has definately pushed people that way, even if they were also short on numbers and not super easy to get; they were still easier to get than a 3080. A 3080 retailing for the best part of a year for £1500+, or an OLED, Console AND Sound system for not much more... it's not hard to see why people would choose it!
I know it was incredibly difficult to get my 3080 FE with many failed attempts and the copious use of Discord stock watchers. I was extremely lucky, I thought I'd missed out when I tried to add it to cart and it failed, but it came back up for sale after furious refreshing of the page (a bot was probably refused or someone cancelled). I only had tens of seconds to add it to cart and check out at most.

The pool of people who wanted one but couldn't get one is orders of magnitude higher I'm sure.

I’m definitely a PS convert. I’ve never really been a fan, hence buying an XSX over a PS5 at release, but I didn’t realise how many great single player experiences they’ve produced in recent years.

Indeed, I am playing the Final Fantasy VII Remake on PC now and I'm very impressed. It's a pity it's so difficult to buy a console too, particularly the digital edition of the PS5  . I'm not sure I want it enough to waste my time on Discord again as I did to get a 3080 FE, it was just too much effort and required a lot of luck (as well as being available just at the right time).

Ive been mainly Xbox gaming for some time now, but im feeling the PC itch again, I want to get back into Elite, star citizen and DCS but a 6 year old PC isnt cutting it any more and the cost of a new rig is insane compared to console gaming.

Day to day consoles are great and little effort, but i miss the depth of spending hours setting up a HOTAS and popping on VR and thats just not something a console can do. That and i love tactical shooters and while some are drifting to console now like Insurgency and hell let lose there is so much more choice on PC.

One issue is how many of my old PC gamer friends swapped over to console, the cost both in terms of cash and time is just so much easier to justify as you get older.

If I had the OLED tv setup like some have that would be another item chalked off. I will consider the pro versions or whatever they release over the next couple of years, but the screw has been turned on the cost of living and I dont have the surplus cash to throw at anything while these fuel bills etc keep creeping up. Good job I have a backlog of PC games to chew through! :)

You could try Geforce NOW cloud gaming, Elite Dangerous is available on the service. It's free to try, but you get lower end machines and may have to wait; it's a good way to test it out though.

Plus consoles are much closer to decent PCs than they used to be (personally I never notice the difference of high and ultra type settings) with similar loading times, similar visuals etc. Throw in the lack of changing over components, constant driver updates, a few crashes and system issues and for me console gaming is just more enjoyable. Plus my console gaming chair and huge screen make it all the more relaxing (I know you can do this with PC, but it isn’t quite as streamlined). I’ll still keep my PC, although I’m struggling to find games to play on it.

Elite runs ok on my current rig, as long as you ignore Odyssey,

For sure, sat on the couch with a 65" OLED TV and ATMOS speakers, is much better than sat at a desk, Consoles do almost everything that you could want now....... Almost.
For me the idea is not about hunting for fidelity or frames, its about the experiences i cant get on a console. Economically it makes not sense at all, but who makes choices about tech or cars purely on economics.

Difficult to see diff between these Gen of Consoles and Gaming PCs. Reality is PCs have been dying a slow death over the last 5 - 10 years. Replaced by phones, tablets, consoles and now even smart TVs. There will always be a niche crowd but there prime has long since passed. Sad truth.

I have all the Playstations 1 through 5 and all but the latest Xbox. I have a decent spec gaming PC with dual 4k screens and a 3080ti and a Quest 2 for VR.

The PS5 is excellent - I bought it for Forbidden West - and almost comparable to a decent PC now. I can't see me going back to HD gaming though.

Thing is you can’t get high FPS on consoles at 4k. They’ve only just released patches for assassins creed to get it to 60fps lmao.

If I remember correctly, they were struggling to get AC running at high FPS on PC either. Have they fixed the HDR yet?

HDR works but I think Windows and the display play a part in how it works out. Its true getting high FPS in AC games seems to be hard especially on nvidia GPU. I completed valhalla and some way through odyssey right now. Thought the 3090 would smash it but the game is kinder to AMD.

So agree it likely is poor work on devs/franchise. I bet if nvidia put some effort on it a game ready driver could improve it a lot but its sponsored by the competitor so why bother eh!

Its not new that certain DEVs optimise there games for Nvidia or Amd cards they were doing this 10 years ago. As for running 4k on consoles, the game DEVs will often run single player at 4k 30 FPS and run say like muti player at 1440p 60 FPS.

Ditched my PC over a year ago after many failed attempts buying a GPU and the ridiculous prices. Invested in an XSX which I managed to get within a couple of weeks even a year ago. It's on my desk plugged into a 1440p monitor and it just works flawlessly.

This is after over 20 years of being a diehard PC gamer.

I won't be getting a gaming pc anytime soon they are a rip off, I might get an OLED TV and I might get a PS5 for PSVR2 and the exclusives I've missed out on but for now gamepass has everything I need for gaming on the Xbox

I really like RTS games like total war and paradox titles such as crusader kings 3 to give up pc gaming. I have a switch gathering dust, but saying that I will be getting a Xbox series X as I saw my brothers and couldn't believe how close it is to a pc in terms of graphics.
I will upgrade my pc but not for a few years as I think RTS games I play won't be too demanding for a while and the Xbox will be fine for other games.
