Console Discussion n here !

yea exactly, stand on the highest mountain, with the biggest way of amplifying your voice and shout it out.

How do you define an incredible game then ? What does it take for a game to be incredible in your eyes ?

You are right about PC gaming, console gaming seem's to be taking over again, the only thing the PC really had over the consoles were better graphics and internet connections, now consoles can do both. Why do we need a pc ? What advantages do PC games bring ot the table ? I can't think of any in all fairness.

Do PC games make you feel more into the game ? No, are they better over internet games ? No, consoles are a more level playing field ! It's only really fps which you need and of course mmorpg, but that will change. I can forsee the 360 / PS3 having a huge MMORPG in the near future which will shake things up even further !

Pc's remain the daddy because they can do everything consoles can, only better.
Consoles only seem better at the moment because they have caught up, hardware wise. Give it 6months and the PC will be back on top in all areas.

Games wise, the PC is still the best for FPS games. Its the only platform for RTS & Godgames, and the ability to mod games far beyond their original content makes PCs, imo, a vitel piece of hardware for any who calls themselves a gamer.

I think one of the things PC gaming had over the consoles was keyboard and gaming optical mouse for controls on FPS games and it still has this. That is one of the main reasons the PC will be better than consoles for gaming, at least for me anyway.

Another plus for PC is that there are decent displays in the form of CRT monitors, most people id imagine use their consoles on a TV which looks awful in comparison. We have the Xbox 360 in the living room on our 28" crt TV and the gfx are poor compared to PC.

Saying that i do like consoles for racing games and find PC racing games too realistic and not as fun. I think Gran Turismo has the perfect balance of fun/realism.

In the current generation nothing has grabbed my attention in the same way that the original Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy VII, Vandal Hearts, Castlevania Symphony of The Night, Ocarina of Time, Phantasy Star Online, Metropolis Street Racer, Shenmue or Gran Tourismo games did. Maybe It's my age but I drifted towards PC games and really can't be bothered with console these days.

In the current/last Generation i.e Xbox/PS2/GC I have trouble picking out any true classics, Metroid Prime is the only one that springs to mind and possibly SSX3 and Halo.

I haven't written consoles off completely, I just want something revolutionary.......or should that be Wiiey :)

I'm the same as you mate. The PS1 was my first good console, i got it with Tomb Raider 1 and to this day i have not enjoyed a game as much. The puzzles were great and like nothing id ever seen in a game before. Plus the sheer size of the tombs you went into were excellent and again like nothing id seen before.

Another game i really enjoyed was resident Evil 1, this game was amazing. The storyline was excellent, the gfx were really good for the time. It was a game i just couldn't put down and wanted to see the next room and figure out the next puzzle.

Gran Turismo 1, this is my favorite racing game ever, i remember being really proud of my first car i built on it and i showed all my mates it and raced them with it. I loved the fact you could earn cash by winning races then use that cash to buy parts and new cars. Again the gfx were stunning for the time.

Broken Sword 1, this game was brilliant, another game with puzzles but a point and click.

All these games were PS1 titles and i have not enjoyed a game as much as these on any other console. OK 2 games that have come very close were Code Veronica and Resident Evil 4 as they had new ideas. The other GT games offered nothing new but better gfx. All the following TR games were rubbish inc the newest installment IMO. Broken sword 3 was pants also.

To be honest with you, I don't know, It's a bit like asking what does it take to make a song sound great to you? Who know? There isn't a formula, maybe that's the point! It just has to grab and hold my attention until the end without getting dull or samey about three quaters of the way through like most games (from any era) are guilty of.

I think console gaming has taken over due to the console that brought gaming into the public eye, the PS1, It's a little unfortunate that once something is percieved as cool or profitable it will inevitably become a huge market for mediocrity. There will always be people who need to own the latest console rather than wait and see what it's actually like and more importantly what games will be available for it. Imagine the pressure that large companies would be put under If people only bought games/consoles on the actual quality of the games. There is always a mad rush to buy the latest console without much thought about the games available it would seem. If everyone waited until there was a choice of about 10-15 truly excellent games the quality of titles would have to be seriously controlled. I know it will never happen, but it would be nice :D

Still playing Guild Wars on PC, more for the community now than the game itself although I still enjoy the game. Maybe this is something the 360 has done well? Hard to tell 'cause I don't have one.

And yes, resident Evil should have made it onto my list as well :)

For me a game becomes incredible when you realise it's taking over your life! I'm sure you've all experienced it. You play it in every spare moment you can find, consider pulling sickies from work/school to play it, you go to sleep and dream about it and your girlfriend gets annoyed because when she's talking to you you aren't listening, you're daydreaming about what you're going to do when you next get to play it! This is why I steer clear of MMORPGs. They do everything they can to get you into this state then string it out for all eternity and make you haemorrhage money from your bank account in the process.

(On Broken Sword)
I can't stand these games. I have to leave the room when my girlfriend plays it and all I can hear is that voice saying, "It's just a door.......there's nothing of interest here.......there's nothing of interest here.......there's nothing of interest here.......there's nothing of interest here". I grit my teeth and snarl quietly, "well why bloody play it then".

PCs and Consoles are better suited to different types of games. People have already mentioned how FPS, RTS and God games are better on PCs. Anything that is best controlled with a mouse and/or keyboard therefore falls into this camp. That would include flight/space combat sims too. Yes you could get a mouse and keyboard for your console, but you play a console on a sofa in front of the tv. Your PC is on a nice flat desk with a proper chair. Perfect!

Consoles on the other hand are suited to driving games, beat 'em ups, party games, arcadey games and generally everything that suits being controlled with a controller. I've never heard anyone play Gran Turismo or Tekken and say, "I wish I could sit at my desk and play this on my PC". Console gaming is a social thing, you can stumble home drunk with your mates and laugh yourselves silly late into the night playing Virtua Fighter or Super Monkey Ball or Mario Kart etc. Would they be as entertained if you ushered them into your study to perch on upright chairs and take turns playing Quake? Hell no. Five minutes in you'll turn round and they'll be slumped back in their chairs asleep, with dribble everywhere.

So I'll always be both a PC and a Console gamer. I couldn't bring myself to part with either.

I completely understand in what you are all saying, but I have actually considered getting rid of my PC, I just don't use it any more other than chatting on msn and browsing these forums. The console though get's overplayed. Don't get me wrong, I have a really good PC (Fx-53, 1gb 3700 memory 6800U e.t.c)

Broken sword was awesome though, truely awesome. What makes a great game.. a great game is when you can't put it down and that you have to go on. Doesn't matter about graphics, or what you are doing, as long as you can't put the game down. Recent games include Oblivion, Ghost Recon and Fight Night. Those are all great games and all on the 360. And yes, the 360 does handle oblivion very well for a FPS.

But still I think consoles are taking over, we shall see Boom, you made a good point about seeing in 6 months then we will know.

For me at least consoles wont take over, as all the games i mentioned before were all games i couldnt put down and yet here i am playing games on a PC as well as my 360. IMO all that has changed are the gfx so far. But we shall see when Alan Wake comes out, that looks like it might be very good and bring something new to consoles. Also Resident Evil 5 looks like it could be good and if Resi 4 was anything to go by it should rock.

2 reasons why PC will never die are FPS and driving sims.

Haha i was like that at first but as i got it with my console and i had already completed TR1 i thought id give it a go and i fell in love with it :o . Such a good game, and definatly a game you can put down. I used to hate it when my mate called for me as i was getting into the game and then had to just save and leave it. It only says theres nothing of interest when you click on a painting or something.

My favourite thing about PC games: The prices!

Thats definatly a bonus, i ordered PREY a few days ago for £25 for PC :) , would be at least £40 for the 360.

The only way I could see a total immersion would be some kinda of neural stimulation (The Nintendo Neu, the Sony Psyche or the Xbox with the Windows-Soul patch).

My GOD dont give Me nightmares - you want MS to have access to our souls!!!

It will be a world full of zombies before long

I completely agree, I know Sony are about to do it and its been the case for a while but £50 for a game is horrendous in my opinion , I would bet that if the publishers etc lowered this to £30-£35 they would sell more than enough extra to compensate

Thats just reminded me, that was something PS1 got right, bringing out the Platinum range. Games that had been out for a while were then sold at £19.99 making them affordable for more people. I think this was one of the reasons it was so successful. I hope the PS3 is the same.

Yea the PS1 kicked off the whole platinum range, the 360 will have one and i'd suspect a few games when the ps3 i launched too, would make sense !s

Nintendo & N64 actually...;)

Q:
Will Nintendo's stranglehold on the mobile market ever be broken?
We keep seeing all these wonder consoles coming out that are in theory better specifyed than Nintendo's current mobile console, but none of them even make a dent.
Even the PSP had a lot of people worryed that people would climb on the Sony bandwagon, but even that hasnt done anything.

The PSP was hot for a while, but again lack of marketing didn't help. It was going a similar route to the IPOD where every one had to have one.

For the hand held market, it's a hame gizmondo didn't really work out. As that console was special, it was a good hand held, just a shame without it being from a recognised company it really didn't get much help. As for can any company break the stranglehold... No is the simple answer.

Not to mention the whole thing was a mafia scam.
