Console Failure Rates

I got first black xbox when they came out not my daily gamer but it has racked up a good amount of gaming time. The power brick seem's dodgy.

ps3 since day one. This july (heatwave) and very long gaming sessions on the last of us and I got the rlod. Easy fix with a heatgun and a good clean and it very quite again and going strong.

Wii. My girls are on their second one

I've been fortunate to not have any issues with my current gen consoles, however, I had no end of problems with PS2's.

Having said that, I don't game as much as I used to, this is probably why none have broken on me.

Just to add my console excursions : I was bought a sega master drive (many moons ago when I was like 6/7 lol) for Christmas - that didnt make it past Christmas day, kept freezing and not working, so mum brought it back to the store who were happy enough to replace it, exact same deal :( - mum brought it back again and the guy at the shop said something like they got a bad batch in or something, at this point my mum didnt really trust the master system and opted to replace it with a SNES - that still works to this day :D - though my legend of zelda game did seem to play up on me when I last tried it (wiped my bloody save :( lol) So right their I had 2 consoles fail on me (that I almost forgot about :o)
I then had a ps1 and progressed to the ps2 (nothing out of the ordinary here - both worked well with no issues and am pretty sure if/when I unbox them for some retro gameplay they'l work lol.
Next console was the Wii actually and I've had no issues with that either (just remembered I got this before the 360 and have had to ammend my post lol) then it was the 120gb xbox 360 elite - went well for a while but I did suffer from a failure on this console -RRoD/error 37 and had to be replaced, was around 2 years old I think at the time, still under warranty though, was a fun moment that I can still remember - was playing COD MW2 with a few mates (dont hate :P) and Salvage map had just loaded up, but my sky had a load of lines through it, the bottom part of the map looked fine, but from the horizon up was all sketchy - so over voice chat I asked "here anyone else's sky look all funny?" and then the xbox crashed, wouldnt turn on again fully as I was greeted with the error 37 screen, rage! absolutely sucked lol

So got my replacement which has worked since, but I use the term loosely - at times it seems my xbox is trying to lift off, been acting like it's ready to kick the bucket for a while - but I really dont play it anymore which may explain why it hasnt. In among all of my consoles I've had a few hand helds - original game boy/ds and a free ds lite all have worked without a problem thankfully - so their it is 2 segas, 1 snes, 1 ps 1, 1 ps 2, 1 wii, 2 xbox 360s, and a few hand helds - really is the luck of the draw at times though :)

My launch day PS3 died an hour ago.

Trying to decide whether it's worth fixing it properly or just blasting it with a hair dryer.

I'm on my 4th 360 and 3rd PS3. Clearly, I'm good at breaking stuff :p
Only past console failures have been a PS1 years ago.

As a bit of a retro gaming enthusiast, it does make me wonder how things will work out in the future. It's nice being able to still buy things from the 1980s and 1990s and, for the most part (always exceptions!), trust their reliability.

Don' think i have ever had a console die on me. My PS3 has had some right use aswell when it comes to COD.

Xbox 360, i don't even know where that as gone. Never gets used so it has no need to break.

I've had 3 360s die and 1 PS3. The wider part about it is the 360 saw a fraction of the use compared to the PS3.
The 360 was a piece of junk for me.

Maybe a very small % is inflation, probably less than 1%.

I've had one RRoD which was fixed and sorted, even out of warranty. so how is that another sale against MS? it's a FIXED console.

But seriously no one gives a **** who sells more, they are both rolling in more money than your entire blood line will ever amass and we are no concern to them so long as we carry on buying their products, a console war just keeps competition healthy and they end up laughing at threads like these.

You will find they recycled a lot of them which is why they had issues again then people had to buy new ones because ms once you had sent your unit in you don't get extended warranty again when it comes back.

This came from some one I know who worked in Germany dealing with the faulty units. They strip them and re use the parts so what happens is you send it your rrod console and they basically gives you parts from other peoples who sent theirs in calling them reconditioned units.

The PS3 is losing money per unit still this is why Sony has not dropped the price and has had fiance issues.

360 is making a slight profit now per unit so they are not making big money of the hardware it is the other bits that create revenue.

Regarding the wii it should be a solid machine it's very old hardware.

A few months back, someone posted that the PS3 was out selling the 360 and a few of us (myself included) brought up that the 360 sales number are inflated due to the RROD and that I would love to see the number of actual active consoles rather that the sales numbers.

Any hows, without making this a console war or a fanboy thread, I tripped over a report done by an insurance company based in America and it makes for some VERY interesting reading.

http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_Xbox360_PS3_Wii_Reliability_0809.pdf

Its a very good report, going into details of the failures and the timescales of the fault. Interesting if your a nerd like me. lol

Shame it's from 2009 and the figures are 3 years out of date.

It was a decent report at the time, but don't confuse it for showing the current failure rates

how many people have an original 360 (the first ones that came out) and it's still working? i personally dont know anyone, all of my mate's ones died on them, most went through several.

I have one it still works sort of the dvd drive is iffy and it generates so much heat also noticed it is so slow I don't even use it also heard most of them died when they updated to metro style dash.

They should have been recalled or a swap program setup

Launch day 360 and PS3 still going here.

The PS3 sounds like a hairdryer when upscaling and the 360 DVD drive sounds like its trying to take off but they still work perfectly :D

With the lack of BC in the new consoles I hope they keep working for a while yet too!

Well that's my launch day PS3 brought back from the dead. Played it for a few hours last night and all seems well...but for how long.
