In today's " climate " why do gamers still go the PC over a console? I do get the graphics are better but all or certainly most of the games can be had on the playstation or Xbox.
I really do get it as I just can't bring myself to buy the cheaper PlayStation option over spending 3 to 4 times the outlay for a PC to just play games. Are we just?

I don't get the whole VS argument when you can just own both, I've probably spent more on my PC audio than it would cost for a PS5 Pro.

Consoles are convenient for playing of the sofa and the occasional exclusive but would be terrible for word processing and ultra wide 4K gaming. (or even just native 4K60+ gaming)

PC, has more choice for gaming. I can play games that I bought in 2006, on my current PC, and not have to rebuy them.

For a console, you have less choice on what you can have to play with. Also, mods, PC has plenty of modded games and far more flexibility. Skyrim, for example has more mods than I could ever name.

To summarise, gaming on my PC is far more flexible, than on my console, and that is attractive to me. Note, I own PlayStation 5, a Series X and a gaming PC.

Are we just?
We are.

Pcs are used for more than just games. Audio and audio ripping and conversion. Office and internet. Utilities. Printing. Programming and video editing. Music creation. Communicating with other hardware. Burning off images IE raspberry pi iso. Can upgrade at will change or replace parts as needed upgrade or add hard drives. Re use old components IE case and PSU. Replace faulty parts easily. Massive back catalogue going back decades
Able to use old peripherals they don't go out of date. Just operating system at will or use multi boot.

I bought a series x on a whim and we played gta5 and red dead. Really enjoyed it. Then it collected dust.

My lad has got into gaming and love PC for al the modding and he is only 12.

However I’ve started to get back into gaming too and bought the 5 pro.

Loving console experience for me atm as I no longer have access to my 3080 based rig due to my lad but also lets me pick up and play whilst on the couch.

To above whilst they both play games , they fit different needs. If you can afford a decent pc rig, you can afford a console. So have both and enjoy.

I have all the consoles along with a PC. I like to have full access to all the big releases. PC I uses mainly for online gaming and Browsing. The Ps5 is a must because Sony Studios for me make the best Sp AAA games going. My wife has a Series X and the kids have Nintendo switches. I only play on Nintendos when a new Zelda is released. I think it will always be this way for me unless we get something that has everything covered as I hate to miss out.

Consoles don't get you thinking about things, ie using terminal/SSH/telnet etc. Learning about DHCP routes, static IP addresses, all the back end stuff.

Like getting a Ender 3D printer and learning all about it, compared to a printer that "just works" sure the latter are good but learning ins and outs of tech is good too.

Performance mainly, and higher graphical fidelity.

I've played 2 games on my PS5 this year, FFVII Rebirth, which had two options: Looking absolutely horrendous in the 60fps mode, and looking kind of nice but at 30fps. Whole time I played it I just wished I'd waited for the PC version.

Second game was Astrobot, which I honestly had no complaints about. Would have been nice to play in 120fps instead of 60fps but that didn't really affect my enjoyment of the game. One of my favourites this year for sure.

Currently playing Indiana Jones with full path tracing on PC, which looks absolutely amazing. The Xbox Series X version runs with it's graphics options set lower than the 'Low' setting on PC.

The only console worth buying is the Switch, great library of exclusive titles with Nintendo delivering consistently at least 1 or 2 bangers every year.

The Xbox and PS5 for me there just watered down PC's at this point, they have all the drawbacks and none of the benefits. The lack of great games for the current gen is alarming, although that's probably down to gamers spending all their time and money on live service titles like Fortnite.

A PC is still a lot better for watching Porn on then a console which makes it worth spending 3 to 4 times the outlay for a PC

I prefer gaming on a pc because I use a mouse and keyboard and for the driving sims I own I have a full sim set up. On a pc you also have much more control over your settings and I think it looks better too. Another reason that I no longer have a console is that the controllers are too small and make my hands hurt as I have large hands. Replacement controllers are also ridiculously expensive now.

Console gaming on my gaming sofa works when I’m in the mood. Minimal fuss, just switch on. Was also a lot cheaper when money was a bit tighter.

With no budget PC looks better, plus I missed the mouse and keyboard for fps and strategy games.

Since updating my PC I haven’t touched my XSX and doubt I will. PS5 is great for exclusives and they are all built around a controller anyway. Will likely stick with the latest PC and PS combo from now on.
