Console vs PC

Go back to MS-DOS where you had to mess around with boot files to eek out another 2K of base memory to get mouse driver to work.

PC's are dead easy to use.

I guess that's the problem with consoles, doesn't require much thinking to use, or even graphics settings menus are too complex hahaha
I feel like you're completely missing the point - or are deliberately missing it.

Sure - you plug your PC into your TV with a HDMI cable. Are you using a wired mouse and keyboard? Have you got Steam Big Picture set to launch by default?

What controller are you using? If you're using a PS5 controller then some games (Elden Ring etc.) might not initially detect that so you have to disable Steam Input for that specific title.

You've got an insanely powerful PC - so of course you just set things to high and start playing, likewise the same reason as to why you rarely encounter issues because you can essentially brute force through most things. Most PC gamers aren't running a 4090 and 9800X3D - so they need to spend time finding a balance between visuals and performance, completely different to selecting peformance or quality at launch on console.

I understand your point, I just don't think it's fair to make a comment that PC on a TV is just as easy as a console is.

I am not denying that PC gaming is gaming with extra steps. I'm just saying that these steps are more like baby steps rather than strides. You of course are not a luddite but sometimes you see comments from people as if you need a degree in quantum something or other to use a PC when the reality is, they are really not that difficult.

I do have a PS5 as you may or may not know and yes I do appreciate the fact I just pressed the button on the controller ot switches the console and my TV on and I'm playing whatever in seconds.
I'm pretty sure we are agreeing in principle on this stuff just valuing certain factors more or less than each other.

Consoles are better for gaming and always have been. It's funny that anyone believes hardware designed specifically for a single purpose is somehow worse than a general purpose computer that is designed for spreadsheets and browsing. PC owners are just trying to justify their spending habit. "Look I can also file my taxes!" woooo

Worst take in this thread by a mile, objectively false, with a good measure of projection too. Imagine thinking you have to justify your spending lol.

Come to think of it,.why is this thread even in the GPU forum? It's a trash thread on an overdone topic that always ends up getting locked.

Yeah, I think we're on the same track but agree that it's different factors that we value more or less.

And yeah, I do agree that some people seem to think you need a degree in computing in order to actually use a PC, they are significantly more straightforward now than ever before. But also much like some people (and a few appearing in this thread...) think anyone using a console are literal baboons instead of people who have actively chosen to have a more 'simple' experience when it comes to playing games.

Not missing the point at all. PC's are literally plug and play, and only need basic knowledge to build, setup and keep running.

Consoles are for those that like to be spoon fed.

Try using Linux, without the GUI.

Easy. sudo (do stuff)

I got familiar with it using Kali Linux for some stuff at work. Not a bloody chance I'd use it at home though, ghastly thing.

I game on a pc for the following reasons

1. Mods - I often play Skyrim with over a hundred mods installed. I'm currently playing the original Half-Life with a high resolution texture pack and a path-tracing mod.

2. Keyboard/mouse support - I bought a PS4 years ago so I could play The Last Of Us Part II.
I stopped playing because aiming a gun with a controller is a horrible experience. Horrible, horrible, horrible. I cannot stress enough how bad it is.

2. When I buy a game I don't see why I should have to buy it again. PS3 GTA V gamers had to buy the game again when they upgraded to a PS4. I like to keep my game for many years. Some of my games came out in the 90s and I still play them.

Even if PCs doubled in price and consoles were given away free, I'd still buy a pc because the above are so important to me. Especially number 2.

The main reasons I gave up on pc gaming for consoles are, cost, time, convenience and I work at a desk all day

The controller Vs mouse thing I used to bother me but I got so used to a controller that if I went back I would miss the controller, especially the PS5 controller which adds to the immersion

You are missing the point and you've highlighted it again with your last sentence.

I'm not sure you're going to ever understand why some people choose to play on consoles but it shouldn't bother you if they do.

Because they have short attention spans? And that PC graphic menus are just too complex?

I feel like Hornet has finally evolved past the point of recommending people with a two bedroom semi-detached spend thousands on an AVR, full atmos setup, and dual subwoofers.

I often play Skyrim with over a hundred mods installed.

Sadly I forgot to back up the "final" version of my config and it got reset when I changed GPUs :( but I had modded Skyrim with high quality assets rendered to the horizon, managed to get a high ugrids setting running stable so that the world was active and alive as far as you could properly see, etc. something you can't do on console.

Annoyingly though the config got reset and I can't 100% remember the settings I was using so older saved games crash on trying to load them and it isn't stable with high ugrids - I managed to get ugrids 9 playing nice before, just a couple of missions I had to mess about with to prevent things going wonky, but now it just causes all kinds of issues.

For those saying PC's are easy, try giving an old(still good compared to what they would get) PC to a family member. You will be getting 24 hour support calls for every little ***** thing, for the rest of your life! Consoles are much easier and use less power, most will be up and running in a few minutes and everything is auto update, no drivers. If all you do is game, consoles are a good option. If you have a PC for other things, adding a GPU(might need a better PSU) can be a good option although it might still be cheaper to just get a console. PC gaming is sort of like virtual console gaming at this point, each launcher is like a console(Steam, Epic, MS, Uplay...). A PC can also be used for other things but you have to maintain it and keep it up to date and when something goes wrong, fix it.
