Constant Windows updates

I reinstalled Windows 7 professional x64 the other day (including SP1) and everyday it has been running windows updates. Something that is 'critical' is constantly needed

Is there an way to install all updates at once or a pack or something? I have now turned Windows updates completely off because its annoying me so much

Check to see if its the same updates or actually different ones. Once it has caught up, it will only install updates on everday 2nd Tuesday of each month (Thats when MS releases them).

after a fresh install it takes at least 2-3 updates/reboots before it's done. the problem is that the first batch of updates need updating and so on. i keep rechecking manually until it finds none.

The .net are the ones that are a pain. I wish MS would release a bit .net release that just incorporates all the current updates

yes applying the updates after a new build can take as long as the install of windows these days

Are all the updates and things like .net even needed? it installed a 'critical' update last night to Office 2010 32bit - Even though I have a 64bit OS

with office updates, your OS is irrelevant. if you're getting 32bit updates, it means you installed the 32bit version of office.

windowsupdate grabs stuff for office as well unless you turn it off, and office updates aren't as cumulative as windows ones, hence it wants to install most of the office ones in a certain order and not all at once sometimes, it's a real pain in the ass.

If you want, you can turn the office ones off and then you'll only get updates for the OS once a month ish, every 2nd tuesday. (which btw looking at your post, it now was and that's why you got updates "again" yesterday

Well, yes. They are needed, they either close security holes, or improve performance & reliability/compatibility.

Just gotta sit there letting it update and keep pressing the check for updates button... it takes time, and keeps on sending them.. but eventually you get to the end!

But yes, There is a lot.

If it's pre SP1, you can install SP1 first and then get the rest, should cut some down.

It's much faster if you have an SSD and you just sit there doing it manually.

I dont see why not, i didnt use it in Windows XP for years. I just had Windows firewall and a AV

Business environments generally use WSUS servers and only include critical and security updates.

Ive never seen windows update running at work (but then we re-package software, have firewalls, proxies etc)

Keeping Windows update to date is going to offer more protection than "anti-virus". Why make it easy for authors of malicious software to escalate privileges?

Most business environments are protected by proper firewalls.

How is that relevant to home users? Of course it's a bad idea to turn off Windows Update. That is fairly bad advice...
