retailer for the first year only unless he took out an extended one with the shop?
after that you deal with the manufacturer...I think?

After 6 months the onus is on the purchaser to prove the fault was present at purchase. So unless this has shown to be the case, the retailer has every right to say no.

Wasn't there a ruling recently about products expected life span. Especially for electrical products?

My understanding is it is a "reasonable lifespan" dependent on factors like what is the market norm, also how much it cost. You need to push back and quote sections of the relevant consumer regs and also threaten and be prepared to put a claim in at Small Claims (not sure limits there).. usually worked for me.. well did with a £400 TV from Sainsburys a few years back
