Contactless payments to increase to £100 from 15/10

Transaction volume plays no part, i set up merchant accounts and i don't use volume of transactions when making an offering. If the company you are using uses volume as a metric, find a different one.

If you only put £20 a month through and I want to put you on 0.3% i'll put you on 0.3%. Although if you buy your own, you aren't getting the decent rates, gotta make money somewhere.

As for terminals, you can buy the likes of Verifone & PAX units but quite frankly they suck & their support is a disaster. If you want the likes of an Ingenico Move 5000 at a reasonable price you want an account with them and access to TMS & GEMS, which we have as we've got a few thousand of them.

Some places may agree to resell them (i could but don't) as it's just not worth the hassle as the merchant can't take them to another acquirer anyway in most cases.
As I said we’ve had this conversation before :o

£100 limit can only be a good thing all round. Cash is slowly dying a death in the UK and Europe less so in certain countries. Anything which can speed it up I’m all for.

There are people still that don't have a bank card and only pay with cash. How can they cope these days? They must have been popular during the first lockdown when many essential retailers didn't want to know about cash! Then when places like cafes opened, it was card only for some.

I guess they found their purchasing options limited.

Plus things costing more money such as unable to get online energy tariffs as requires a direct debit. Plus some media companies such as Sky charge more for not paying by DD.
Of course they do - the work involved in collecting manual payments is significantly more than direct debit.

Direct debit has been around since the 1960s, and been pretty much the norm since the 90s.

How old are you? You come across as somewhat of a luddite - perhaps it's time to accept some of the conventions of the 21st century.

I think some people just like to be awkward. Bet they have no issue with being paid by bank transfer or do they insist on cash in an envelope.

Given that even pensions are all paid into a bank account and how long these things have been around, there isn’t really many excuses these days.

Can ApplePay/GooglePay be trusted to work 100%? I was behind someone in ASDA who was trying to pay using ApplePay and they were having problems. They had to leave their shopping as they didn't have their wallet/card with them.

So it seems like if I was to get ApplePay/whatever I'd still have to carry my card around for backup as like all modern tech, never works 100%. My current phone (Mi8Lite) doesn't have an NFC chip so I always use contactless card/chip&pin.

This is my perspective too. More often then '0 times' which is enough to turn me off, Google Pay and Samsung Pay have let me down. Also, my credit card works when it has run out of battery

Mine has never not worked and it's been used literally (correct use) thousands of times.

I can safely say when using my phone to pay for goods, transaction has always gone through. Not had any issues.

I’m 40. I’m up to date with contactless, Apple Pay, direct debits and online banking.

I work at a supermarket with a large number of elderly customers who don’t do modern technology at all. Don’t have bank cards, draw pension at PO, pay all bills with cash there too. I had relatives doing the same thing. It drove their children potty. Even when one of them suggested that her mum could go onto a cheaper energy tariff online (daughter would have to do the account) and would save her £300 a year. Her mother wasn’t interested. “Oh I like to pay at the post office. The girls are nice”.

My dad sorted out his parents’ pensions so they come via bank credit as soon as pensions could be paid this way. It has saved them so much money and time (not queuing at PO for an hour). It was a blessing when my grandfather was ill and my grandmother was looking after him. Now my grandmother has been widowed for 11 years- her health isn’t wonderful - helps her too.

My father even deals with her finances and bills now. He has put her on online energy tariffs.
