Content aware fill in Photoshop CS5

I find that odd, seeing as the fiddling I've done with both the content aware tools and the resynth GIMP tool has been very effective and I'm sure it would be very simple to remove quite a lot of watermarks (obviously would depend rather on the nature of the watermark).

I've done a little more playing with it on some very basic images. Items on a very simple gradient sky, and it's just absolutely rubbish. I always use a solar curve to check the quality of my retouching and this doesn't even stand up to visual scrutiny without it, let alone with it. I might make a little video on a random selection of images and 'quick' selections. A complete load of overblown hype IMO.

Don't worry it's been on the minds of many of us already. Though I can say at present, with the fiddling I've done with the content aware tool, I'm no more worried about people being able to remove watermarks with it than I was before it existed.

My thoughts exactly.

Please do, and please explain your solar curve to check re-touching, sounds useful.

Strange, I've had really good results, and some that have been a very good starting point with a bit of fine tuning needed but on the whole I've been impressed with it.

Of course they do actually say that it is most effective in areas that are much more randomly made up than a simple gradient sky...

They do? Fair enough. To be fair I think that's just so the complexity of the background can cover what a rubbish job it's done :p My trial of Camstasia studio expired so I'l see if I can find a semi-decent screen recording program to show some examples.

I'll admit I have tried a few bits that have gone completely wrong but used in the right circumstances I've found it to be a great tool.

Of course nothing can replace careful and considered use of cloning, redrawing etc etc (which is what I've been doing for the last 12 years or more....stuck on version 5.5) but even on trickier areas it can give a great starting point to work from.

Man I can't even remember the interface of 5.5! Though to be fair I could still do most of my retouching on that also (No better way than a good old dodge and burn session). Have you persuaded your boss to upgrade you to CS5 when it's out?

Personally I'd urge anyone taking their first steps in Photoshop to start out on 5.5 as the interface is rather more simple (especially the brushes etc) and the lack of automated tools means you have to learn the fundamentals of the tools and how each and every tool can be used to best effect which I feel gives a much better understanding in the field of retouching.

However, I have been using it for so long now, I don't need much teaching of the fundamentals of the tools and now I just want some nice simple automated stuff to speed things up when I'm bored...lol

I've asked for CS5 along with Indesign CS5 but we shall see what happens....
