edit: BEFORE POSTING PLEASE NOTE THIS, I DO NOT HAVE A THERMOSTAT IN MY PROPERTY.

not sure if this would be possible but who knows with the latest tech maybe i will get lucky.

bascially i'm having an issue with heating my place and the random hours i do. i never know what time i'll be returning home so never bother to put heating on a timer as often i'd end up heating a decent sized house to literally come home and go straight to sleep.

what i'd ideally be able to do it switch on an eletric oil filled radiator in the room i select an hour before i get home so that it's warm for me.

is there any thing anyone's heard of that'll allow me to control it being on or off using my mobile (android). i'm thinking it'd have the radiator plugged into it and then it plugs into a socked, it's connected to the wifi and then when the wifi says give power to whatever is plugged into you it does.

if not by mobile, what about by windows pc, which i could then remote log in to using my mobile.

I'm pretty sure you can get wifi controlled thermostats. My brother works for british gas, I would ask him but I am at university!

Cold?!

Come work in -20c with me, that will man you up :p

All joking aside, you can get the wifi thermo as stated.

Yeah there is some British Gas advert showing them controlling the heating from an iPad. I'm not sure if it works from outside the home though, ir just when connected to the home network. If it does work from anywhere I can see me upgrading in the future, would be handy to turn the heat on before you arrive home, or turn it off if you left it on by mistake etc.

Edit - Heatmiser do a WiFi thermostat, however it gets poor reviews as it requires port forwarding and a fixed ip otherwise it won't work. Also Apple only and seems to be unreliable even when set up correctly.

Should be able to rig the thermostat to a network then connect to the network from outside the house. A quick google shows that there is plenty of wifi enabled stuff about.

Is there though?, I have looked at this and the Heatmiser one mentioned above is about the only standalone wireless enabled thermostat, BUT it gets terrible reviews. I *think* British gas offer one for circa £150 installed which isn't bad IMHO .

forget i mentioned the radiator. i want to be able to control a socket using wifi. The wemo is exactly what i want, but it's stupidly iphone only godamn!

Maybe you could buy a cheap second hand iPod Touch, install the app, buy the Wemo and tether through you Android mobile?

The British Gas one is wifi controlled and can switch a mains supply. Just because it's used on a boiler usually doesn't mean that it couldn't switch an oil filled radiator in theory. However it's likely only rated to 3A where as the oil filled radiator is likely to be 13A.

OcUk were selling some smart plug extensions were they not? Just get a PC/network controlled one and configure a VPN/SSH tunnel back home from mobile to control it.

This is only 6 quid odd. You could get an IR transmitter for your PC to control it.
