Control TV from 55 miles away

Another vote for logitech harmony, simple to use and works well, plus integrates with voice assistants

wish mine would work properly with my Google Home and Mini, drives me mad it hasn't got a clue what its doing!
It annoyingly had a few different Google Home apps to link to your harmony account, have you tried removing and adding the latest?

Just a word of caution - obviously voice control isn't the best. We've all had loads of instances where it thinks we've said something else. If this person is struggling with changing HDMI source, voice assistants will be worse when they go wrong.

I don't think the OP has said exactly what the issue is and what the setup is. Maybe we can suggest a better alternative?

Not had time to play with it recently will give it a go tomorrow whilst the wife is working...

So someones Mom is having trouble changing input and you suggest a video call. Younger people have no idea - At the moment. :)
My Mum is in her 60s and would have no issue, and as no age was mentioned I couldn't know that this lady was incapable of answering a phone and following instructions.

What tv does she have?
What peripherals?
it might be possible if she has say a chromecast or firestick and you could remotely access a device on her network to feed instructions to it.
or send it direct instructiosn.

Another word of caution for the Echo. As others have covered, it depends on brand.

Yes you can turn it off and on, however not all TV support the channel changes. I have a fairly modern Sony TV, all I can do is turn on/off & volume settings.

If selecting the source is the main problem, you might want to check that the TV has discrete IR codes for HDMI1, HDMI2, etc.
I've come across some devices which don't have these, and the 'source select' IR command just cycles around the inputs. If your Mum's TV is one of these then it might make it difficult to select inputs remotely, although there may be work-arounds.

Ok more info, she is 74, not sure make of tv but about 6 years old and not a smart tv. The only things she has connected is a dvd player she doesn't use and a sky box.
When the sky box is powered up it DOES NOT automatically switch the source on the tv, if it did that would make things much easier.
Thanks for the suggestions ill look into some of them.

With a TV that's 6years old one of the HDMI ports will be CEC enabled and will auto detect return input from attached devices so potentially swapping th HDMI cables could solve the problem? If the dvd player is not used why is it plugged in?
