I use Remotelyanywhere.. fantastic piece of software made by same people. 10/10.
It just needs a browser, can use a Firefox plug/activex control or java runtime thingy for remote desktop so will work on pretty much any computer.
*edit*
its not ideal but.. iif you cant use WoL most modern motherboards support turning themselves on at a selected time, usualy called Wake on alarm or alarm or something similar in the Bios
Only problem with Remote desktop on its own is that it isnt encrypted, so anyone can grab your username/password. Plus, it also means opening up your network 24/7 on the RDP port, which means anyone can sit there and randomly guess your user credentials if they can connect.

yeah I know, great piece of software, I use it virtually every day. Have it installedf on both my PC's, my GF's PC and my mum's PC just in case they need my help
Just wish I could afford the pro version or the rescue version....
One other thing, you also dont need a static IP, as your home PC sends out packets to the Logmein servers constantly updating your IP, so perfect for anyone who has dynamic IP assigned by their ISP. Of course, you could get around that by using DynDNS and remote desktop, but since Logmein is easy, secure and free...
well i'm glad people have found this useful - i've taken advantage of it already when i forgot all my planning for school today. just popped on to my pc (38miles away ) and pulled it off to the amazement of members of staff who are now going home to try it!
