I thought the Z4 was very comfy too - certainly not a crashy/hard ride. I'd happily do long distances in one.
On 18's with RFT's and M-Tech suspension the ride is harsh. Not so much that it ruins the cars but it's definately more Sports than it is GT (Unsuprising given other cars in the BMW range fit the Cabrio GT genre better).
Suprised you found it very comfy without a hard ride. This goes against both mine and more educated peoples opinions. Evo, for example, found that..
They might look good but they reduce the ride to near-appalling on some surfaces. Concrete surfaced motorways are positively painful
And went onto to say...
Our Z4 featured BMW's sports suspension as standard, and I really wish it hadn't: the ride's simply dreadful. It dominated every journey and became incredibly irritating over time. There seemed to be no handling benefits on offer to offset the constant pummelling that drivers and passengers received when on the move. It had none of the precision you get with a Boxster, for example, nor the control you'd expect from such a firm set-up. In fact, Honda's recently revised S2000 felt like a limo in comparison.
Did you really find it very comfortable and relaxing? I've taken the Z4 on several long journeys and whilst its great fun when hooning it is not a relaxing or comfortable cruiser. The ride has improved since I replaced the tyres with non RFT F1's - and it doesnt spoil the car - but it's not the ideal choice for somebody who specifically mentions the word 'comfortable'.
Your findings very much suprised me Nick. How long did you spend in the Z4?
