Looking at samsung monitors. It seems many models have dropped the dvi port.

If i get one with only HDMI and convert it are there any issues related to this?

My 580gtx's have mini hdmi's on them also.

So basically what im saying is am i going to see any negative/positive results from doing this as compared to just buying another monitor with a dvi port?

Can't you just use a mini HDMI to HDMI lead and be sorted or am I missing something?

You can get them for under £2.50 from that orange site that sells the DVDs :)

I'm confused, why are you talking about DVI to DVI? I thought you wanted to connect your monitor via HDMI?

Mini HDMI is different to DVI if that's where you're getting confused

The reason i ask is beacause i once had a bad experience with a media centre i made using dvi to hdmi to connect to a old samsung 40" telly. The picture was cack. Not sure why, this was a few years back.

i guess this sort of thing is a thing of the past?

If i use hdmi or mini hdmi to connect my pc to the screen i am going to get the exact same experience as using dvi (on gfx) to dvi (on monitor)?

If this statement is true i have nothing to worry about?

I can't see you having any problems using a mini HDMI port to connect your pc to your monitor, no.

If there were problems in doing so, there would be no point in having them :)

For £2.50, surely it's worth a bash?

Just to clarify DVI and HDMI are electrically identical so you'll get the same quality image with either.

Some people occasionally have scaling issues with HDMI but these are usually easily sorted.

HDMI can also carry audio so if your GPU supports it, and the monitor has speakers, then you can get sound through the same cable.

Not meaning to confuse but you're actually quite right and just to expand upon the above points. HDMI is a standard devised to simplify the connection of non-PC devices to monitors and TVs. There is theoretically no difference in the picture signal with the main differences being the smaller port head of HDMI, the ability for it to carry audio and the lower bandwidth compared to DVI Dual Link (so no 120Hz or 2560 x 1440 resolution for example). Some Nvidia GPUs do treat anything connected by HDMI as a Digital TV which uses a slightly different colour signal to the monitor. AMD cards (particularly mobile varients and those with outdated drivers) will provide a distorted picture due to incorrect scaling options (overscan). Both of these issues are easily tweaked on the graphics driver though so it's nothing to worry about. I have a fair bit of experience with some of the new HDMI-only Samsung models (S23A550H, S24A350H and S27A350H) and don't find the lack of DVI to be a real problem.

Well im looking at the S23A550H so your the man to talk to.

Im using it to game etc on nvidia so i should just cable up for hdmi and crack on then?

ps. the other unit i had scaling issues with was an ati hd mobo

You may have to tweak a setting related to 'Desktop colour settings' on the Forceware driver (selecting 'Desktop programs' instead of 'Auto') but other than that you shouldn't have any problems. What I would say is that I had some mixed experiences with the S23A550H and generally the performance (in particular contrast) was not as good as on the S24A350H or S27A350H I tested. It could just be a 'one off' issue as I only tested one unit but it had a green colour tint which could only be corrected by making 'contrast leaching' colour adjustments. I don't want to put you off it though and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. I am going to try to get hold of another one to review or look at in the meantime.

1.4a. Unless you are buying a monitor intending to output to non-PC devices for 3D then don't worry about it. 1.3 is just as good for PC use.
