Hi
[System info in sig]
Im new to the overclocking world and im looking at overclocking my CPU and my GPU.
can anybody recommend what cooling parts i will need?
The 4870 is the sapphire one and has some heat pipes on it. I have the standard cooling unit on the Q6600 at the moment and a 120mm and a 100mm fan on the case but space to fit another fan.

I've been watching the temperatures and the Q6600 is normally between 36 - 46 degrees and the 4870 sits at about 45 degrees but can reach 70 degrees if i hammer it.

probs got a budget of about 100 pounds give or take

also any information about how to go about overclocking would be really great and anything else i should know, eg does it reduce life expectancy of parts etc. :)

(pc normaly used for music production work and some gaming)

Thankyou

what case have you currently got ?
you can clock the cpu to 3ghz np with the stock cooler:D

but if you to go beyond you will need a 3rd party cooler

how far you want to push it depends on how hungry you are for performance for the life expectancy it can take some away not sure what the exact figures are but in a couple years time you probably will upgrade your computer :D

£100 is a very healthy budget:D

the temps on the gfx card are fine were you inteding on over clocking that aswell???

right not sure which case fans possibly 2 more 120mm to get you optimum cooling:D

if your gona spend £100 mite aswell get a new case:D

gutted i only got the case a few weeks ago, i knew i should have bought a decent one online. do you think its not going to be possible to overclock in this case?

i currently have an antec gaming 900 case with an extra side

on my cpu i have a arctic cooling freezer pro 7 with arctic silver 5 thermal paste

currently clocking at 3.15ghz temps are dependant on the room temp but vary from 35-40 for idling and about 60 on peak load with prime 95

my mates got the antec p182 case with a thermalright cpu cooler 120 extreme and a 120mm scythe S flex can on his that is clocking at 3.6ghz and doesnt go past 60 ever!!!

but tbh your case will be fine if you just clock it to 3 i cannot imagine the current fans are quiet are they???

You will be able to overclock, but I'm assuming you've got very limited cable management in your midi-tower case? That could cause some problems with overclocking. The Antec300 case is an awesome case, it's larger than the midi-tower you currently have, and plus it has four 120mm fans + one 140mm fan.

I've compiled a list of what you should get if you're looking into serious overclocking (3ghz and beyond)

It's slightly over budget, but it's worth it :)

edit; You could try the OCZ Freeze paste, that's meant to be awesome, I've just bought some to see what it's like, will be applying it on Monday when I get it xD

you dont need ram coolers omg lol

if you buy that case just put a fan on the side much easier and cheaper:D

the case comes with 2 fans you will need at least another 2:D one on the front or 2 and one on the side tbh your gfx dont run that hot so you can just put them both on the front:D

The mem cooler is in there for an added bonus, creates more airflow as there is more air moving around the case, helps a hell of a lot with the over system temperature. You are right, it's not needed, but it's worth having.

Edit; Ross, you might want to edit your sig to 4 lines, as it's stated in the forums rules ;)

Yeah, was thinking about it, whats the best way to go about doing it? theres a bit in the ati program called overdrive. or is there a better prog to use?
like i said im completely new to this.
thanks again

Firstly you should really remove the link to the competitor, either link direct to case manufacturer or dont use a link
Secondly you dont have to fit aftermarket GFX card coolers, but if you want to I used 2 of these, it'll void your warranty so only do it if you're comfortable, but it made my cards run a lot cooler and more importantly for me a lot quieter :)
And if you're new to overclocking I suggest you read the threads stickied in the overclocking and cooling sub-forum, should give you an idea where to start

With reguards to the OCZ freeze paste, I have some of that and it seems to be pretty awesome. My Q6600 is overclocked to 3.2Ghz no problems, and idle sits around 30 degrees. I also have the Asus P5 series motherboard, and a Sapphire (Toxic) 4870 - not sure on the temps its achieving, but using the Ati Over run software it seems to be absolutly fine.
