I need some new cordless power tools. What brand should I go for... I like them be good and last a while.. Ryobi seem do a full kit at screw fix for 199 which got cordless drill, driver, jigsaw, curculat saw and sander etc is it a good brand?

Bosch and Black & Decker cordless products are good but not particularly cheap. $199 for all of the stuff you mention would indicate to me that it's either an unbelieveable deal or, more likely, that it's not very good quality.

Black & decker cordless tools are pretty crap...(normally only have 1.2ah batterys / small 10mm chucks / come with cheap chargers / etc)
Bosch Professional range (blue in colour) is good but over priced & over rated

Hitachi cordless tools are normally very good...

I will only buy Li-Ion power tools now. Nicad ones are seriously poor. Of course, they cost considerably more! What sort of v rating are they? Fast chargers? How many batteries? Could be a good deal, could be an excellent deal.

Personally, I only buy Bosch now.

DeWalt are good and so is Makita.

In general you are paying the money for the batteries. For example, I live near the DeWalt factory and they have a factory outlet.

You can buy a 14.4v cordles hammer drill driver from there for £40. The batteries cost £60 each and the charger is another £40.

Hence why the drill with two batteries is normally over £200.

Cheap drills have cheaper gearing and motors but its mainly the batteries where you suffer. My DeWalt ones last for ages and recharge in an hour.

I have seen websites if you google them which show with cheaper drills that if you break open the batteries they are just 1.5v small batteries in series to generate the necessary 14.4, 18v 24v etc. Proper batteries are not like this.

I have a cheap b&Q set which I bought as it was on offer for £50. Cordless drill, lamp, circular saw and 3 batteries. The torque and power that these produce is nothing like my DeWalt stuff. You can feel the DeWalt drill turning in your hand when you power up.

My suggestion is don't skimp and check out Ebay as well. I picked up a DeWalt cordless circular saw for £45 on there with two 14.4v batteries so now I have 4 batteries and two chargers. It was worth £45 just for the two batteries tbh,

Thanks guys will go look for some good deals. I was looking at Bosch pro and dewault see what deals I can find.

The ryobi are 1.7 18volt I believe

The ryobi are decent, i bought these for my guys at work and they were used heavily, 5 days a week. If your only doing diy they will be a bargain. I prefered the ryobi over dewalt. My personal cordless we makita though.

We had about 30 sets of the ryobi, and last year i got lithium batteries for them, as the nicad batteries were knacked after about 3 years use.

I can confirm that builders, all that I know anyway, will agree that DeWalt and Makita are the best makes.

Screwfix are doing a makita 18v 2 batteries charger etc for £99.99, I got one and can recommend it (£89.99 easter deal made it all the sweeter)
