I'm currently looking to upgrade from a Pentium 920 D 2.8GHz, ABIT AW8-MAX Motherboard, CORSAIR 2x512 DDR2 XMS2 Twin2X 5400C4.

I've been looking around on OcUK at both AM2 and Core 2 Duo but can't seem to make my mind up as im looking to go either SLi or Crossfire, not looking to buy new memory till i have purchased both Processor and Motherboard.

I have a budget of £250-£300 for both Processor and Motherboard what do you guys think i should do?

I have been thinking of the Intel Core 2 Duo for awhile now over the AM2, just don't know what to do about SLi - Crossfire or just a good Motherboard and Processor to get for my budget.

No i'm not really into overclocking to be honest. Just looking for a decent Processor and Motherboard at stock speeds, looking for the best bang for my bucks. I am a casual gamer and like my games without stuttering.

EDIT: Thinking of Crossfire.

Yes good thinking im not so sure SLi or Crossfire is worth it anymore with all these decent cards on the horizion again.

What i mean by casual gamer is i still play games on my pc but only for say 1 to 2 hours a day but enjoy them with max settings too. Defently looking for good power, stability and reliablity mostly.

Thats a very good price be looking to get that soon, just looking around deciding on what to do now. Been looking at this option tell me what you think?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £117.49 inc VAT.

Abit Fatal1ty AN9 32X (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail -£117.49 inc VAT.

Looked around for reviews gave this Motherboard a very good write up.

All these choices! What to do very tempted by AM2 right now! For what i would pay for a 6600 i could get both a decent Processor and Motherboard on AM2.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £117.49 inc VAT.

Abit Fatal1ty AN9 32X (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail -£117.49 inc VAT.

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail - £215.01 inc VAT.

The reason for why i looked at the Abit Fatal1ty AN9 32X (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard is because it had such good reviews for both Reliability and Performance, don't mind investing on a decent motherboard.

If i was to buy a Intel Core 2 Duo it would have to be Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) what Motherboard would you all suggest?

It's given me some good thought into all this and looking into all avenues before i purchase.

Whats the problems with AMD at the moment don't they all do the same thing as Intel. I'm not one for looking at benchmarks and comparing FPS all i'm looking at is getting a decent setup.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £117.49 inc VAT.
Abit Fatal1ty AN9 32X (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail -£117.49 inc VAT.

I am taken by this so far.

What could i get for £300 on a Decent Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and Motherboard. Not a great fan of Gigabyte motherboards had a few issues in the past with a few of the Motherboards.

Intel DP965LT 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail - £82.24 inc VAT.
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail - £124.54 inc VAT.

Is this any good for gaming etc?

Not a big fan of Gigabytes Motherboards had a few issues in the past with them on both Intel and AMD platforms, by the time i come around to purchasing next week the DFI would be back up in price. Well i have got £300 to spend on a Processor and Motherboard so may as well make the most out of it.

As long as it would play my games in max settings the AMD option is very close to me right now. I remember the days when everyone loved the good old AMD.

At the end of the day both will play my games like oblivion in max detail with a good graphics card, i'm not going to personally sit there and look at how many FPS its doing really. When i come around to the purchasing of the graphics cards im going to go for the 8800 series. So i have this feeling that AMD maybe the better option for me right now, i expect AMD soon will release a decent Processor.

At the moment i think AMD have good processors at the right price.

Whats the problem with the above Motherboard.

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail.
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail.

And your saying this is the best choice to go for gaming etc.

After reading all the advice and being flamed for no reason i've decided to go with Intel. Thanks goes out to those who have helped!

Is there any particular reason why i should not go with the Intel DP965LT 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard?

Don't think DFI Infinity 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard will be on offer next week as i'm placing the order not until then.

I'll probably end up go with the DS3 is it currently the best choice of Motherboard to use for the new Core 2 Duos?

Also is it worth me going for the 6400 instead of the 6300 or not?

Apologies for all the questions just want to build a decent all round PC.
