Hi all,

Contemplating a Quad for my Gigabyte P45-DS3L system.

I have noticed you can get an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650, S775, Yorkfield Core, 3 GHz, 1333MHz, 12MB Cache, 9x Ratio, 95W.

But also the Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor QX9650
(12M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) 130w CORE STEPPING: C1 SSpec: SLAWN

Can anyone tell me the actual differences, which is faster, what is better for OC'ing and any other info I may find usefull?

Like easyrider mentioned the only difference is the multiplier unlocked, also probably a lot higher price tag! :p
 
I have noticed both new the Q9650 at £260 and the QX9650 at £230

I know this is i7 - i5 territory, but it would cost quite a bit extra to replace the EP45-DS3L and 8Gb of PC6400C5 system with new tech equivalents which after this years spending spree I don't think I can afford?
 
They are still pretty expensive for s775 chips, a good alternative would be a second hand Q9550 EO chip.
 
I've been looking for an EO Q9550 which is when I noticed the above CPU's, most of the second hand Q9550's on the bay have been pretty close to what some discounted new Q9550's are, with the above not much more expensive and new and unused.

TBH,

After the sale of you old kit and that ram you could go i7 or x6 for less than you think.

I got my i7 920 D0, Mobo and 6gb kit all in for £300
 
Good point easyrider, ill admit that my i7 rig cost about £550.00 a year ago, almost half of this was made up from the sale of my q9550, p5q deluxe and 4 gb ocz reaper, the rest was funded from a gambling win. The asus p6t dlx oc palm board that ocuk is selling, (£140.99) is basically the same board as my current p6t dlx v2 that cost £220.00 iirc, buying second hand and shopping around can help lower cost as well.
 
Iirc, you had a CO for a few weeks that you ran at 4ghz?

Bit off topic, but have you ever had any cold boot issues on your p6t se.
 
Cheers, just wondering as i get the occasional cold boot on my p6t dlx v2, rig has been tested extensively with prime/ibt/linx. Can be days between them though.

£15.00, not bad. Did the CO revision run much warmer than the DO?

about 15c hotter under the same loop.

the vcore needed was the problem.

But at 3.6ghz it was fine so for 100 quid a bargain.

Just that the D0 came along at the right time and price or I would have kept the c0 @ 3.6ghz 24/7
 
One of the things I am thinking of is the likes of a 95w Quad that will run around 3Ghz without OC'ing for those times I want to run stock with speedstep etc enabled, yet if I want to OC, still have the capability of 4ghz with a saved Bios profile. It is one of the reasons I didn't want the Q6600.

The nearest to the above Q9650 is the i7 870 on paper? Same sort of price as the Q9650 and QX9650. Is the 870 the sort of chip to go for if you want the best options at stock with OC playability when required?

Currently 8gb of ram is in use. I guess around £50 to £60 per set could be expected if I sold them, but an 8gb DDR3 kit is around £230, and I would probably prefer Dominator? Don't really want to go back down to 4gb?

I am guessing around £150 or so for an overclockable yet fast at stock motherboard? Is Micro ATX worth looking at? Can't imagine getting much for the Gigabyte mobo.

It still looks like £400 + for the switch fom an S775/DDR2 set up to i5/7 DDR3?


At the moment I can get,

Q9650 for £260

QX9650 for £230

Q9550 for £180 (is this a reasonable price?

Or the i5/i7 route for around £600 (£500 with 4Gb ram), How much of a performance increase will this have, that I will notice over the kit I have fronted by the likes of a Q9550/9650?

I am not sure I want to drop down to Micro ATX/i5 750/4gb basic DDR3, though this would come in at around £350? (I already have a gaming/HTPC micro ATX E8500/4gb Dominator set up being sorted out with a new small HTPC case)

Also wondering how this change in equipment, and re-install will affect my files such as WAV which have no meta data if I change I think? My last switch was a bit of a headache due to the amount of files.
 
A new i5 rig is a bad idea with Intel bringing forward Sandybridge to this year. You would be moving from one dead socket to another. On the other hand i would'nt be paying current prices for a 45nm quad on 775. Prices are ridiculous now and are going to get worse as the supply dries up.
 
I think the best option would be Q6600 until sandy bridge or sell now and go i7

If your spending money then make sure its an upgrade and not a sidegrade.
 
Intel make there money by not reducing prices, they replaced 775 socked with a new one then are slowly making all the 775 chips EOL so they dont have to reduce prices.

No point me getting a Q9650, too expensive an upgrade for what it does. No point me getting i5/i7 as the next socket has already been changed for SB.
 
:) Many thanks guy's, I will hold out for now and wait for the SB - AMD conclusion? Glad I posted here before impulse buying :D

Guess I should re-think the PC configurations of my current pile of S775 kit....
