Core i3-6100 vs AMD A8 7600.

Which is the best all round CPU? I know the AMD has the better GPU (Or does it?).

This is for a nephews New build where money is tight. I think he will eventually get a new dedicated GPU when money is available. He has no PC so all new bits have to be bought except i can supply a PSU and SSD for him. I think his brother has a case for him (Micro ATX).

He will want to game a little i guess. Thanks for any advice

The AMD does indeed have a much stronger integrated GPU, so if there's any gaming on the cards then that's the better option. They'll both need you to set low settings and a low screen res (720 or 1080 usually) but the difference is usually the AMD being playable and the Intel not-quite.

NOT the same GPUs but it gives you an idea: http://www.techspot.com/review/1041-intel-core-i7-6700k-skylake/page9.html

Just make sure to get the fastest memory possible for it. In fact that seems to be the case with the i3 too these days.

The Skylake i3 absolutely spanks the A8 in every category, including graphics. They're not even in the same league.

The A8 might have had the advantage in GPU over Haswell based i3's but you'd need to step up to an A10 to match them now and you'd still be losing out on CPU power.

Any links where i can see that? Interesting what you say. Ta

Thanks for sharing.

There's something funny about those results. Compare Bioshock Infinite there to Bioshock Infinite here. Normally the 7700K pretty much matches the 7850K (to within a few FPS), even with decently fast memory, but Tom's have got it a full 30% slower. They haven't said enough about their testing to work out why the big difference AFAICT.

I don't know what Tom's were smoking when they got those results, because everywhere else has Kaveri beating Skylake in every test.

Thats what i was wondering as i thought the Kaveri was ahead

The A8-7600 seems to do extremely well!

The kaveri is much faster than an i3 in games, skylake or not. Those Tom's Hardware results are highly suspect, as already noted.

If you wait until next week, I suspect you'll be able to pick up one of the higher SKU Kaveris for the same price. Furthermore, there's a possibility that the Godavari (Kaveri refresh) chips may drop to retail before Xmas.

Explain?

Scougar where are you?

(He has great experience with Kaveri).
Those results look suspect because it doesnt state what memory speeds the apu runs at, and also Kaveri needs the P-states tweaking with msrtweaker to stop the chips throttling both the igp and the cpu cores.

I don't trust those reviews at all

Unless you get a Broadwell Core i5 or Core i7 with L4 cache, the A8 and A10 CPUs spank Skylake when it comes to gaming with the IGP.

Also,be very weary of some of the Skylake reviews too,as if they are using a super high end motherboard with very high speed DDR4,its going to make the Core i3 IGP look better than it is. Try using a DDR3 Skylake motherboard or one of the cheaper ones which supports slower RAM and it won't look as good, and those are the kind of motherboards people will be pairing with a Core i3.

At least the AMD A78X and A88X motherboards which support the higher speed DDR3 RAM fine are quite cheap.

OFC,the Skylake Core i3 is faster with a discrete card though.

Edit!!

I can see why those TH results look weird - the RAM is overclocked way past standard:

http://ark.intel.com/products/88191/Intel-Core-i5-6600K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

The CPU only officially supports 2133MHZ DDR4 and they have overclocked it to 3200MHZ with a high end motherboard.

Whether you could overclock the Core i3 memory controller that much is debatable, especially on a budget motherboard.

Second Edit!!

There is another issue with the TH review - the A10 chips are not 40% faster in games generally.

So Cyanide's comment early on is innacurate?

Then we have:

why buy either when you can get a second hand 2500k bundle for less

Good point, if you're on a tight budget then second hand seems the obvious way to go. You could probably squeeze in a half decent discrete video card if you were to buy used.

Apparently so, I'd only checked a couple of sources and saw the 6100 keeping up with the A10 meaning the A8 should have been slower. That'll teach me for doing a quick browse at work :p

It still murders the AMD on everything other than GPU performance though.

It may murder everything else but that is only in benchmarks! Would one actually notice those difference in 'real life?'
