Core i3-6100 vs AMD A8 7600

Dual core i3 Skylake looks like a good CPU. Quite a few to choose from! AMD APU are good too though but i do keep reading that the Intel are far superior in everything else other than gaming.

Now, i know that my Nephew will be using the PC for a 'little' gaming but mostly it will be used for his Uni work etc. Would an Intel be the better bet or should he stick with AMD?

I did mention the 7870K to his dad as i have that one and for me it is great but i am no speed freak and wouldn't be able to tell any differences between different CPUs!

Stretching the budget a bit more he could go for the:

7879K or the Core i3-6300 3.80GHz. I notice that there is not much difference between the 2 in price. Its definitely a headache when you are helping a relative to put together a nice PC as his dad is worse than me when it comes to tech even though i am not a complete noob.

As i stated before, we have a PSU and an SSD ready and a case.

Ok, thanks. The gpu on the i3 still looks ok for low setting gaming in the short term?

It depends on what type of games?? What kind of uni work??

I think you need to dig a bit more.

Firstly since the Core i3 6100 will have a worse IGP,gaming is less viable, meaning you would have to upgrade the GPU performance quicker, plus you are still saving £30 on a cheaper CPU in the A8 7600 and even more on a motherboard and the RAM.

Plus, unless you are spending loads on a new GPU,it makes me wonder whether it really matters what CPU you get as you will be 9/10 GPU limited, unless it is some RTS game.

However, for uni, maybe a laptop might be a better choice?? You can get Core i3 ULV and AMD A8 based laptops for like £300 now.

He has a laptop which he hates.

He wants a decent PC but limited due to money available even with help from his dad and me.

:)

What I and and many others have learnt over time is get the best of what you can afford. In this case the GPU is just as important as the CPU.

From what I hear though a good gaming rig to play steam games on can be based on the kaveri stuff but the other folk here will be more current on that than I am.

If you go intel on the desktop then for me its an i5 minimum for some longevity. Last Christmas I built my nephew a tower based on one and he loves it. I gave him my old 7770 and hes only just replaced it as it was good enough for most of his gaming.
