Core i3 ivy bridge

I was just about to make a thread about this as well, I just checked and I cannot find any press releases. I guess it's delayed and Intel are being quiet about it.
 
I'm not sure if it was true but sure I read there won't be any K series i3 processors as it would render AMD CPUs useless as Intel would dominate all sectors of the market... No idea if that was just speculation though.

I swear a while ago, way before ivy's started to come out, i saw a list which had a i3 K version in it.

What's this bug you speak of?

probably better known as the 24p bug.

its basically a problem where a movie will play in 23.976fps but some GPUs (including all of Intels) can only play them in 24fps, so every few min it skips a few frames to 'catch up'.

problem is that you lose audio sync too.

its a big problem for HTPC/movie buffs, because it means you need to get a discreet GPU when a igp should do, which is extra noise and heat (or like me you get a passive HD6450)

interestingly, AMD llano/Trinity APU stuff also has the bug!

"Proper 23.976 fps support

One of the biggest failings with the Clarksdale-based Core i series CPU’s was that they could not use a resolution of 23.976 Hz, which is necessary to view Blu-Ray properly as most of modern movies currently are released with that refresh rate. Instead, the CPU’s output a 24 Hz. When we watch a movie filmed in 23.976 fps (23.976 Hz) at 24 Hz, it means that every 40 seconds, an extra frame must be inserted to sync the audio, meaning we get a slight judder in the image, mostly visible if the image is panning at that point.

Unfortunately, the new Sandy Bridge CPU’s still have that error. The way around it is to turn off UAC (yes, it is weird), which then allows the CPU to use 23.976 Hz instead which means we will only see stutter every 5 minutes or so.

For a long time, AMD has had much better support for 23.976 fps, and that continues with the Llano APU. While not hitting 23.976fps exactly, it comes close at 23.978fps (measured by MPC-HC) and that means stutter only once every 8 minutes.

As long as UAC is turned off, the Intel Sandy Bridge CPU’s do a decent job in handling 23.976 fps material. AMD still has the upper hand though, with almost perfect 23.976 support without having to turn off something as important as UAC.


Note: It is very possible these issues will not be noticed by users. Some may even prefer to set the resolution to 60 Hz and use a so called 3:2 pulldown to get the 23.976 fps video content to play even if it introduces judder when panning."

One of the main reasons for HTPC purists to override the Intel integrated GPUs was the lack of a proper 23.976 Hz refresh rate. AMD GPUs have a history of consistently supporting 23.976 and 24 Hz refresh rates. With the AMD 6550D, setting up these refresh rates was quite easy.

We have seen that Intel is able to achieve 23.976 Hz refresh of sorts by disabling UAC on Windows 7 systems. There is currently an Intel driver in the works which removes this restriction (and I have my hands on it! Expect to see how it performs when I review ASRock's CoreHT 252B in the coming days).

Back to the Lynx system, setting a 23 Hz refresh rate gets us the same sort of accuracy as was obtained with other AMD GPUs. Playback frame rate locks to 23.977 fps and the refresh rate oscillates on either side of 23.977 Hz. Instead of a repeated frame every 42 seconds, we get one every 1000 seconds, long enough for most people not to notice."

For whatever,reason the magic Intel driver has not been released from what I gather(I could have tried it on my Core i3 2100) and the AMD IGP seems to still better in this regard.

OTH,since there are no retail desktop Trinity CPUs for people to test,we cannot comment on the state of 23.976Hz playback as the IGP is totally different to the one in Llano.
 
Hmmm. Just upgraded 3i 530 to i3 2105 (not that I needed more power, but getting stability issues), and was hoping to one day use this system for playing blu-rays.

Don't like the sound of this 24p bug. Hopefully will be sorted by time I use it.
 
I assume the bug goes away if u use a proper graphics card? Even a cheap £20 dx11 card?

The HD4000 graphics would be disabled so yes. I do wonder what is the case with MAC OS seeing as it has no UAC (well it has it's own unix based security)

One thing that's stopping me buying a Mac Air. Can't find a decent laptop, want 13" or 14" with dedicated graphics, ivy bridge, matt screen at least 900 height (with dual channel ram, thanks for that Dell you idiots)
