hi guys hope u can help, just got a new rig:
amd phenom 11 x 4 965be rb-c3
gigabyte ga-ma785gt-ud3h mobo
4g ddr3@1333mhz
ati radeon 5770
tbh my tech knowlege is pretty much non-existent,so im hoping you can help. i have 3 x 80mm fans in the case as well as the usual fans on cpu/gpu/psu. still running the cpu at stock speed.
i downloaded a program called core temp to see how hot my cpu got, with an eye on ocing at some point. the highest temp reading i have recorded is 63c. surely this cant be right? the heatsink and fan on the cpu came supplied with the rig,im assuming its the one amd supply with the cpu. normal idle temp is around 32/34c. but after playing bc2 for a couple of hours core temp had recorded a high temp of 63c. amd say that the highest recommended temp. for this cpu is 62c. a friend told me that this cpu did run a bit hotter than the 955, but surely not this much? can anyone shed any light on this? id appreciate any advice you guys can offer.

Hi coretemp your coretemp voltages are apsolutely fine processers are very strong anything elow 80 with your cpu at full load is fine nothing to you to worry about.

BTW all cpus are different some need more voltages than others to achieve the similiar speed

I don't exactly know the regular temps for AMD processors but if it's the highest you recorded then it's fine. I only worry if it starts to get to 70C and some people have even higher thresholds. It probably is only a reference heatsink that came with the CPU too and from the sounds of it your case lacks in airflow so temperatures are as expected and absolutely nothing to worry about.

This does, however, limit your potential future overclocks. In order to improve your temperatures the first thing you can do is invest in a better CPU cooler and fit extra case fans in order to improve the general airflow of the system. What case do you have?

63 is fine, the 62 temp amd states is for case air temp not cpu core temp i think.

i was running a 955 overclocked to 3.6ghz on stock Voltage with a shop bought heatsink (asus silent knight 2) and it was cooler than that.(fell around 56-56c) (not by much tho) u just have to remmeber its winter.. its gunna get a bit hotter in the summer :( I know its a pain but have u ever thought about buying an air cooler? there are some amazing ones out there around £20-£30 mark :) Id personly not feel comftable running my cpu at that temp or with just 3 80cm fans :( SPESH if you want to OC...also a BIG welcome to the forum :D *waves*

P.s http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-001-ZA&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395 its only a tenner :) Im sure it will be a lot better than stock too.

or

if you budget goes to this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-068-TR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

and your case is big enough that will allow you to overclock a lot in the future.

CCIVO 705 Black/Silver Midi Case 24pin SATA Prescott 500W PSU
i realise this isnt a very good case or at least it wasnt an expensive one. with hindsight i maybe should have spent a bit more cash on it. thanks for the welcome by the way!:)
putting a new heatsink/fan onto the cpu will involve dismantling the system wont it? if this is the case and i have to remove the mobo etc. do you think i should invest in a better case? im prepared to spend another £100 or so to get this right but that would have to cover case/heatsink/fan. could you recommend a decent case/cooling solution with this in mind? im told that some of the self contained wc systems give excellent cooling, but are they good value for money?
how easy are they to install? complete noob with tech stuff!

New heatsink should be an easy job, usually just involves taking the side off the case to get access to it followed by removing the reference HS and installing a new one. Although when ordering a new HS it's also worth ordering some aftermarket thermal paste with it.

I also assume you're using the Prescott 500W PSU at the moment? That could be another obstacle to overclocking as cheap power supplies tend to fluctuate more than branded stuff and just regarded as generally less reliable and inefficient. Because of the latter it's usually worth investing into a good PSU straight away as it will waste far less electricity and thus reduce your energy bill and will literally pay itself off.

In regards to a replacement case there are many suggestions at your price range so I suggest doing a little more research (go on hardware websites, case section on these forums, etc). As for for self contained watercooling systems they do give better cooling over air, however, in your case aren't a worthwhile investment IMO. You're looking at them from purely increasing system performance side of things and for the money they are worth you can simply buy faster components in a first place, invest in decent air setup to OC those and have some change left over.

so i wouldnt have to strip out the mobo etc.? i changed the psu when i got the rig. cant remember name of psu but will post when i get the chance. will this be something i can do myself? like i said complete noob at this, but i like to think i can find my arse with both hands!:D
seriously though, is this something that someone with no experience would be able to do?;)

been looking at heatsinks. the one that you recommended looks cool, but when you add the price of a decent fan thermal grease then its less than a tenner difference from: corsair h50 which of these two will give me the best result? watched a video on youtube with a guy fitting the h50. is it really as simple as he made it look? havnt made a decision yet, just mulling it over. any further advice would be great! thanks!:D

That zalman cooler is amazing for a tenner, comes with a fan and thermal grease. Obviously more expensive solutions will be better but for price to performance the zalman wins hands down.

put a corsair h50 in today, bit fiddley getting the pump/res section onto the bracket when i got it back into the case. but not too difficult really. case looks a bit crowded now thh. also replaced the 80 mm fans with 3 x akasa apache black 120mm fans. much, much quieter. got one of them on the rad as an intake another at the front of the case as intake third on the side as exhaust, right next to the gpu. this has had an effect on the gpu temps but i havnt really done any comparisons on it at load yet. put amd overdrive in and using it to check temps. etc. havnt done any ocing yet but i will feel much more comfortable doing so now. my cpu temps are 28/29c at idle and i ran the amd overdrive stability test for over an hour with the temps. never exceeding 49c. so the cpu was running all 4 cores at 100% constantly and the hottest it got was 14c lower than the temp it got to running bfbc2 for a couple of hours. to say im impressed would be an understatement! i will think about doing some ocing over the next few days and see what this thing can get up to! thanks for all the advice. stuff i picked up in these forums has been invaluable!:D
