If you're buying 975s then it will be pricey. No point buying a 975 when a 920 can be overclocked to around 4GHz on air and costs nearly 1/4 of the price.
I specced up a "budget" i7 rig a few weeks ago and reckoned I could build one for around £800. For that, I can get 26,000 ppd. To build an equivalent rig with 9800GTs, you'd be looking at 4 GPUs + mobo + RAM + CPU etc. I don't think there'd be much difference in cost tbh and my i7 rig would be cheaper to run - which, whether you factor it in or not, is a big consideration for most people.
Anyway, I'm not going to labour the point, I'm just stating my preference based on what I've looked at.
