Is there any certain correct amount of sleep?

My job isn't physically exhausting, work in IT so hardly taxing, just a lot of thinking sometimes which can be kind of draining I guess. I walk to work each day which is a round trip total of 4 miles exactly, it takes me 20 mins to walk each way. Working hours are 8-4.

Now, I am currently trying to work out the optimum amount of sleep, I normally sleep from 1230-7. But I still manage to sleep in like today, over 30 mins which caused me to be late by 10 mins. I have tried sleeping at 2230 but I just lay there wide awake and struggle to sleep.

So, I ask you, GD, what amount of hours sleep do you give your selfs? And do you think there is a natural correct amount of sleep the body should be given?

That's what I thought too Leth. A mile is more like 15 or 20 minutes. As for sleep, they do say 8 hours then it gets less as you get older so that it's 6 hours by the time you're an OAP. Tried a compromise at 2330-0700:

Well the average person walks at 3mph, so 60mins divided by 3 equals 20 mins to walk 1 mile. If you do it in 10, then you're walking at 6mph. You could be breaking the speed limit in certain places at those speeds lol.

As for the sleep, i think 8 hours in enough.

Takes me around 20-25 mins... I am 6'2" and a fast walker if that helps lol.

As for the sleep, the book idea is good...

Normally sleep from anywhere between 22:30 and 23:30 to 6:45.

The dark mornings wont be helping with not waking up on time.

How fast do you walk? I had to walk from the bus depot to my work once as there was no buses available. Took me about 40 - 45 minutes and its was a little over 2 miles.

The optimum amount of sleep will vary from person to person. When I'm getting up at 5 in the morning I try to be in bed by about 11pm at the very latest. 9 would be the ideal time for me, but often I tend to stray over that due to doing stuff on my PC/watching TV.

Well I can function on 4 hours a night and have done for years, every now and then i'll have one night where I'll sleep for 8 hours, which is normally a weekend. I can go to bed any time from 22.00-01.00 and i'll be up and wide awake 4 hours after. Been up since 2 this morning, and no matter what I couldn't get back to sleep.

My parents said as a kid I never slept as much as my brother. Different people have different needs, I've often got things on my mind, which is probably why I wake up, it use to be irritating, but I've now got use to it.

Night shift worker here so I am all over the place. When sleeping during the day I usually get around 5 hours, 10am til about 3, maybe more if I am lucky(or less if my neighbours make a lot of noise).
But when I sleep during the night and do not set an alarm for anything I sometimes sleep around 12 hours!

I am actually trying to cut down on my sleep so that I get about 6 hours a day but if i set my alarm I almost always just ignore it

How do you sleep in? Do you not hear your alarm at all or do you hit that snooze button like it's going out of fashion?

Also +1 for reading before bed if you are not sleepy.

Your body will take what sleep it needs. It's also about the quality of the sleep too. The problem is that people worry about it too much, which is detrimental as it gets them into a habit that something isn't right.

For example, I used to sleep 4 to 5 hours a night but felt fine the next day but used to worry about it. My wife on the other hand will sleep a solid 8 hours and still feel tired the next day plus she'll have a snooze on the sofa. I used to think I had the sleep problem but it turns out that my wife has because although she sleeps more hours than me, the quality of her sleep is poor. So my sleep is more efficient.

It took a few counselling sessions to realise this and now I sleep longer because I don't worry about it. The mind is a curious device.

There isn’t a right amount of sleep as everyone has different needs. I normally have to sleep 8-9 hours just not to feel too tired the next day.

I am a slave to the snooze button. I usually hit it twice before getting up. I had started to up it to three times, but managed to force myself to cut back again.

I ****ING HATE SNOOZE!!!!!

*ahem* sorry, had to get that out... I'm a "hear the alarm and get up straight away" sort of person you see... :p

As for sleep - well as AH said, it's about quality of sleep. Sometimes I'll be in bed for 7+ hrs but only sleep 4-5hrs. If that's all my body wants then that's that.

Do you do any other exercise? Maybe doing a bit of physical activity after work might help? Don't do exercise too late at night though as it'll keep you awake.

Keep away from computer/tv/games before bed as it stimulates the brain too much. Reading a book is by far one of the best ways of distracting you from thinking about sleep and away from your worries. Try not to go to bed on a full stomach either.

How strange, I lay in bed last night thinking I would post almost this exact thread this morning when I got into work. Was really after how long it took for everyone to get to sleep? I seem to have a strange problem in that I can be absolutely shattered watching telly on the sofa or during the day at work but the second I get into bed, I am wide awake.

Even last night, I went to bed at 10 but didn't get to sleep until after midnight. I can't remember the last time I came into work not feeling tired, but I don't actually sleep for much longer on the weekend.
