Morning all, My wireless connection last night was rubbish while playing Fifa on the XBOX One even though its got a static IP address and sometimes wireless is the only connection I've got and most of the time it works but other times I can use wired so last night I was able to play one game wired and it was perfect.

I thought id log in to the Router and make sure both Wired and Wireless IP addresses were forwarded but ......... (this is the problem)

I've already got the wireless IP Address forwarded for the correct ports but when I try and forward the same ports for the wired connection it doesn't work it says its already forwarded but that's only for the wireless IP address

Am I thinking about this the wrong way? Should I forward the ports then set the wireless and wired IP address as the same on the XBOX?

p.s. I know this isn't an XBOX site but its the only gaming site in registered to and for some reason cant post on Virgin Media

You can only forward the specific ports to a single IP address. One of the reasons you can't use port forwarding for two of the same consoles in the same house.

Had someone a few weeks ago wanted me to port forward Port 80 to his CCTV camera system. Thinking about it now I probably just should have for the gits and shiggles.

As you won't ever be using different devices on the same IP just set both wired and wireless to the same IP on your Xbox.

You can't really have 1 port forwarded to 2 devices.

thanks well this still hasn't fixed the issue I've changed both wireless and wired to the same IP address and it works but the NAT type is still strict not open its doing my head in!

I'm going to restore the route tomorrow and then restart the Xbox connection from scratch then forward the ports and see where I go from there thanks again

Does your router have UPnP as an option? If it does then remove all port forwards for your XBOX, activate UPnP and live your life worry free.

Use DMZ? Demilitarized Zone. Solved all my problems! Will not very safe in practice to use on a network, its safe enough for your xbox.

Surely UPnP would be better though as the XBOX would at least be behind a firewall. If you stick it into DMZ then you're opening it up to the world?

How can it be "not safe practise on a network but fine on your xbox" though? The XBOX is on the network and you're exposing it to public IP space.

because the xbox isn't really that vulnerable to being hacked as hackers have not really took interest in hacking the xbox and as far as i know there is no vulnerability to hackers using the xbox as a gateway to the rest of your network as DMZ is usually segmented from the rest of your network. Not sure what you would be so vulnerable to on a xbox with it being open to the world? They are more likely to bring down the Xbox live network than try to hack specific peoples xboxs lol.

Best solution, get multiple public IP addresses and a proper firewall, set outbound nat rules so that each device has a different public IP address, then set the incoming nat to forward the ports to the desired internal device based on the public IP address they come in on.

Or save a load of money and hassle and use a protocol designed for such an issue....UnPnP.

Multiple IPs from an ISP so you can forward traffic by port depending which IP it came in on? If that was the case just give the devices the public IPs and leave them public facing. Just a much more cost inefficient solution for the OP than using DMZ.

Lol wut?

Just turn on upnp

I've tried this as well as having the static IP and ports forwarded and still no luck

Tried this as well..... Didn't understand what it was doing but I enabled it and it didn't work

Any how this morning I've reset the router to Default so ill start again with just a wired connection and hope for the best

You can't forward the same ports twice but you can get around the issue.

I do this on my PS4. When you are changing the connection type and setting up the connection choose a manual set up on the console and manually select the IP address (ie you're not using static ip on the router, you manually choose the IP on the console). On your router you port forward to 192.168.0.50 but you don't set a static address for your console. Now you're free to change your connection to wireless to wired as much as you like and you spend 60seconds doing the configuration on your console. Far easier.

If it doesn't make sense ask me what you want me to clarify because I'm crap at explaining stuff.

Thanks ..... I'm hopeful that's its sorted now just by restoring defaults on the router and setting a new ip address on the Xbox
I've then forwarded the ports and restarted the Xbox a few times played on line and its stayed open so fingers crossed that's the end of the issue

Glad it's sorted.

Its a pity UPnP doesn't work as desired on the new consoles, I get the same issues as you on PS4. We shouldn't have to faff about with our routers!
