****Corsair SP120, AF120 and AF140 fan review****

What are your thoughts on me using the AF140 Quiet Fans in my define R4? Are they very quiet and will they work well in said case?

They are pretty good at 12v, but if you don't like the noise (the R4 is fully sound deadened so should be actually quiet at 12v) you can just use the 7v converter supplied.

They move what I can describe as a good amount of air, I actually have earlier videos where I messed up and had the fans blowing into the camera, all you can hear with the 140mm is massive airflow over the mic.

Okay, do the fans run okay at 5v. I was looking on the Corsair site and it says something about the operating at 7v and 12v but the controller in the R4 does 5v, 7v and 12v.

I have no way of trying 5v, but I assume they will need the 7v to actually start spinning.

Okay, thanks. My PC is on my desk within a foot of my head, so noise is an issue. Will the AF140s be quiet at this distance? I could just keep them at 7v on the controller.

EDIT: I could even drop them to 5v to just turn them off when the PC isn't in use?

I really like these fans, I have 4xAF140's and the 2xAF120 performance. Performance wise the 120's are great, the 140's aren't as good if you compare the size of the fans, they move about the same amount of air, just the 140's do it much more quietly.

I also have that 200mm Bitfenix Spectre Pro, while it's got good airflow it seems to have nearly no static pressure and the motor noise seems quite obvious to me. I will be taking it out of my rig in the future to replace with 2 more AF 140's.

At 5v you will struggle to hear them depending on your case. At 7v you will most likely just hear the airflow and usual case vibrations hum. 5V is the lowest I can get them on my controller, they don't move much air at all at 5v though. 6.5V is the lowest I run mine at and the sound level is good.

7V will be fine, especially in the R4, could probably get away with 9V tbh and still not mind the noise, while having good airflow. Not amazing airflow, but certainly enough. At 12V my case gives me chills when I walk past it.

Lol yep, like with most fans. I don't recommend putting them infront of hard drive cages. I just use a stock fractal 14cm fan at the bottom front intake, but have the AF140's everywhere else except the top where I have the 200mm, but want to replace it with the AF140s.

I'm going to need 7 of the AF140s, which is going to cost me more than my define R4 did.

I would only get 5.

Top exhaust x 2
Front intake x 1 + 1 stock fan underneath it with hard drive cage infront of it.
Bottom intake x 1
Rear exhaust x 1

Don't know why you would want 6 or 7? I would swap the side panels around because it will only let dust inside or make the case noiser using the side panel fan. These fans don't have much static pressure, so if you don't remove a hard drive cage I wouldn't expect a lot of air to get through and it's waste of £15 lol.

I have the Arc Midi case, for the hard drive cages I want an Apache 140 PWM it has good SP. I really want another 2 AF140's for the top of my case.

If you are using all the hard drive cages, I would get different fans for the intakes. As exhausts or unrestricted intakes these are great fans.

The stock fans are quiet in my Arc if under volted though I can hear a higher pitch from them.

Putting my ear to the bottom fan in my case, which is the stock fan I can hear high pitched motor noise. Doing the same to the AF140 is a much nicer to my ears deeper sound, this is at 700RPM which is 7.6V. My case isn't quiet but I think that's due to it being so open and having no deadening like the R4. I would definitely consider the AF140's for a quiet pc if under volted.

There are other options for a silent pc. I got these fans because they look great and have a good noise to air flow ratio.

It's hard to compare the noise between the stock and the AF140. I think the AF140 is quieter but I think it also can spin at higher RPM which can make it louder, though the airflow is in a different league when you want it.

Try find some reviews on the Aerocool Shark fans, they have an attractive price I'm tempted to buy one just to see what they are like. Don't look as good though.

The tricky part is that the stock fans will run at 5v, 7v and 12v on the fan controller. However the AF140s only seem to go to 7v. If you can recommend me a good silent fan that is 140mm that would be wonderful. If not, i'll probably give the Spectre Pros a go.

Good review that, you should review some more fans, if you manage to get some more time at a future date. :)

Hmmm, just had an idea, quiet a simple one but still. I just popped the side panel off and swapped the stock fan on my Corsair A50 with a Spectre Pro and an adapter and the case is pretty darn quiet now.

My AF 140's go down to 5v but that is only 500rpm! The AF140 is the only one I can recommend first hand. The Akasa Apache has been recommended to me many times.

I also like the look of the 140mm Bitfenix fans, but I am very happy with my AF140's and would be confident putting them in an R4 and expecting them to be quiet enough for my ears.]

edit: Just saw your post and rofl, those corsair stock fans are horrible!

Apologies for dragging this up, how do the Quiet SP120s compare to Scythe GTs and Akasa Apaches in both noise and performance on a rad?
