Cost of living in a flat?

I don't know if it has changed but it used to be a student living with a non-student will not mean a reduction in council tax, unlike students living together.
I would check this.

I would check this.

I've checked on the GOV.uk website and have based my figure on two points:

1) Full time students do not count as an adult for council tax - here.
2) I'll get a discount because I would be living with someone who doesn't count as an adult for council tax - here.

The full time student page is a bit vague but my general impression from the first paragraph is that full time students do not count as an adult for council tax therefore if a house were to be occupied solely by full time students, no council tax would be paid.

I'm all for using programs such as iPlayer but the missus would rather watch TV live. I told her you could just watch the programs for free on the internet but she wouldn't go for it.

Can't blame her. Who wants to watch a screen on a laptop/tablet of some form or sit at a computer. Most people love to sit on a comfy settee with their feet up viewing a big screen from a distance. Or any form of buffering. Completely chilled.

Ours is about pm:

Rent: £825
Water: £25
Contents insurance: £11
Broadband & Phone: £15
Gas & Electric: £50
Council tax: £117
Food & Drink: £250

Think that's it, for a total of £1,293.

it really depends where you live. i suppose this is closer to london i should think. occasionally you would have to pay service fees on top of the rent for flats.

It's realistic. If you eat a rubbish diet then you can keep it cheap, but if you factor in one ofs, alcohol and bits and bobs that you buy outside of your 'main' shop then it adds up.

I eat perfectly healthy for £50 a month.
I don't drink but I wouldn't count alchohol as "food" and I would have a separate budget for takeaways or take stuff like that out of a budgeted allowance I would set my self every month.

I'm fairly simple living a fairly simple life, I live well within my means without even trying

Not far off really, off the top of my head this is what we pay....

Rent - £550
Electricity (no gas) - Averages no more than £30 in Summer, then goes up to around £60 in Winter.
Council Tax - £80 (Same, Mrs is student)
Water - £32'ish
Food - We don't really have a set food budget bud i'd estimate about £160-£200ish.
Phone/Broadband - Paid £90 for years line rental up front and then £3.25 a month for TalkTalk which despite its massively bad rep has been absolutely flawless since day dot.
TV license - No thanks.

do you get letters from the tv license people saying you are being investigated ?
My last one said something that sounded like they were taking me to court if I didn't contact them, I like how they make it sound like it's so easy to opt out as well , just tell us who you are on the website because we are desperate to know who lives there..........lol.....

NO ONE! I say NO ONE! is invading my privacy to check all my browser history to see if I watch live TV online.
The only thing I watch live is hbogo and thats not even a channel you can get in this country so tv licensing can **** off
I guess some people would find it really intimidating and think they really are being taking to court

I opted out on the license website but I have nothing to hide so I don't mind. :)

Actually, my £400 is groceries in total, not just food.

So it includes the odd washing powder, loo roll, toiletries as well.#

We do eat well though, and try to make dinners next day lunches as much as possible.

I would save a fair bit if my gf drank tap-water though, waste a fair bit on pepsi and flavoured water for her.

Three balanced meals a day for 55p each. Sure.

yup I eat fine right now my freezer is so full I can not fit another item into it and my fridge is half full , my pantry cupboard has about 50 various tins of stuff.
I'm not really a vegatarian but I only eat chicken , bacon and pepperoni and not very often so I guess that cuts a lot of my food budget as the vegetarian alternatives are often much cheaper.
I do a lot of slow cooking in bulk as well which I'm sure saves tons of money

toiletries , alchohol , cleaning products , washing powder , softner etc are not included in my food budget like some people are likely doing

I pay £1k per month for a 2 bed flat in Hertfordshire. Yet drive 30mins up the road and you can get the same space for £500. Would love to be able to pay that little for somewhere to live.
