Indeed. But instead of just shouting "you're wrong, get over it! It's company policy" etc. over and over again, I am currently searching for the UK equivalent (which probably won't be too dissimilar).

So you can actually fit cases of wine, trays of food, industrial size packs of washing powder and the like in these bags?

That was for the US which the law will slightly differ

the only info I could find for the UK is along the lines of a store detective can only search you with your permission but is unusal to do so as you could turn round later and deny giving it.
You can be detained if they have reasonable grounds to suspect a crime but again if they did this and it turns out you had done nothing wrong they would be in the crap. Simply refusing to let them check your reciept and goods might not be sufficient.

Is the focal point of your argument regarding my "utter stupidity" really going to be about how big my bags are? (oooh errr)

This is basically what every thread has become in GD. Who cares? It's not like you're actually going to do anything about it.

But he is going to do something about it , he's looking up the human rights conventions so he can take it further.

Who can blame him, this is exactly what the UN had in mind when they came up with the Human Rights convention, Genocide, False Imprisonment, Religious Intolerance, Spiritual Rights, Free Speech, Right to Free Politics, Democracy, Shopping at Costco etc, its all there, just wiki it.
