Costco receipt checking

As has been said already, the T&Cs state that guests are also bound to the T&Cs.

I can't see how a guest or anyone can enter into a legally binding agreement in such a way but hey ho.

I can however see that if the goods are bought via the member using his card then the member is held to the agreement and as the good as are technically his and bought by him then they can be searched as he has agreed.

Still need to detain you then whilst they check the CCTV....

CCTV is monitored by security. If he sees you do something dodgy like put something in your bag/pocket then they have reasonable suspicion to detain you.

If you have no proof, then what do you expect them to do? Let you go on your way with a load of beer you've not paid for?

Only if they can prove that you didn't pay for the beer. If I walked into a shop with a can of coke and then they saw me walk out with it, am I legally required to provide proof of ownership for that item?

Well since they've not been done for any of this already and considering the size of the company go figure,

and therein lies the problem - "It's a big company so they must be right".

Or, more accurately, "it's a big company that will spend a lot of money on legal advice and is fairly regulated, so on the balance of probabilities and on the basis they still operate the policy, it probably is right"

The guest didn't. The member did, and regardless of who is paying, he is buying the products.

7. Only members with valid membership cards may purchase items at Costco, although we welcome two guests per cardholder they can't shop.

Exactly. They are probably right, but it wouldn't hurt to question it. Unfortunately most people just assume they are right 100% of the time. :)

Lets say to the OP you were in tesco, and upon leaving something in your bag caused the alarm at the door to sound, when the security guard came over and asked to check your bag would you go on another geek rage?

No, because then they would have reasonable suspicion to search my bags :). This happened to me not too long ago with some headphones that I bought.

gambitt you just won't have it,

Won't have what?

you know you're wrong and you keep on whining,

I don't know that I'm wrong. I'm not whining, that's just how you're perceiving it :)

you won't get far in life with that attitude,.

Won't get far in life? I'm 28 years old  (cue obvious comment about how I'm acting like I'm 12) and I'm doing just fine in life but thank you for your concern.

Why would they have reasonable suspicion to check your bag though? Theres nothing to steal between the checkout and the exit, and you have just been through the till, so there is, according to you, no possibility of theft.

Because the alarm went off.

Wrong store. As I said before, in Costco a member of staff loads your shopping onto the checkout. Not the same in Tesco where you have self checkout, for example.

Do you kick up a fuss frequently over these small none issues? If you're doing so well how are you able to spend so much time on a forum posting and posting and posting about something so simple that you've literally made a mountain out of a microbe.

Because the alarm went off.

What about in the likes of costco where they dont tag items, so instead they hire someone to stand at the door and act as a theft prevention?

Ah sorry i misread that there was a separate member of staff to load the stuff onto the checkout, still doesnt stop you from stashing stuff as you walk freely around the store though. Like the bloke who tried to steal the suitcase i mentioned earlier.

Ever since I was falsely arrested and lied to by a police officer, my outlook on life has unfortunately changed somewhat. I now scrutinise many things to ensure I never get screwed over again and it's turned into a bit of a habit. Call it a chip on my shoulder but I'm now a lot more cynical. Having some spotty teenager in a shop prevent me from going about my day and effectively holding me against my will (yes even for 5 minutes) does indeed annoy me.

You want to talk about mountains out of microbes? The magistrates court does this all the time. I've started thinking like they do.

As for time, it's a bank holiday and I'm incredibly bored. This has been a fun thread though. :D

The exit scanners arent just there for people using self service though are they as i'm sure your more than capable of working out ? , they are there to catch ppl exiting without paying, slipping items into other bags / pockets , transferring into tesco bags at checkout etc etc etc.

Seriously why are you so intent on pushing this, seems perfectly reasonable. Or were you on some ***** scouting mission and miffed you couldnt get away with it. Josticks for the climate camp, a tray of Pal for the dog on a string ?

What's your point? (assuming you have one)

they are there to catch ppl exiting without paying

You don't say? They also do it without interrupting me.

Seriously why are you so intent on pushing this,

Intent on pushing what? I'm just replying to posts on a discussion forum, is there a problem with that?

I'm sorry I only speak English.

The store will have to be very carful how they tread with anything like this. If the OPs mate wasn't in shouting distance and he wasn't in the mood to chase after him to get the receipt and was generaly in a bit of short frame of mind and had just uttered the explanation and walked off, if the store employee had dragged him back or whatever then regardless of what contracts were signed, then the store and employee involved could find themselves in some quite hot water...
