Could Amazon compete with Youtube?

I've never seen a successful ad blocker for YouTube. Not on chrome anyway. Pihole doesn't work either.

They host the ads on the same server as their videos now so it's not as simple as a host or address block.
I use both uBlock Origin and Adblock for Youtube, can't say I've seen a single ad.

Social networks are one of those things where it kind of makes sense to have everyone under one roof, they don’t really work otherwise. Youtube is really just another social network these days.

The social networks that exist today have basically carved out a niche and play to that niche to make it hard for other to break into the market. It basically can be summed up as:

Twitch = steaming
Insta = where the kids hang out
Facebook = where the boomers hang out
Twitter = anyone with a public profile
Linked in = jobs
YouTube = video
Imgr = memes
Tik Tok = I don’t think anyone really knows where this came from and why it exists.

I try not to block ads on YouTube - I get a lot of value from it (not enough to pay for premium though sadly) and many of the content creators put revenue back into making better stuff.

But it is getting harder and harder to not do so - some videos are completely ruined by the sheer volume and nature of the ads - it is one thing that might ultimately be YouTube's undoing.

Every video is also sponsored also it seems these days.

There's a podcast I watch that had at least 4-6 sponsors in it and they stop the show midway through to do half the advertisement and it's also at the start. Usually ba good 6-10 minutes is taken up by their sponsors.

I pay for premium membership. So if it had adverts on top of the sponsors then I'd likely stop using it as much and never watch the podcast either.

So you want one of the biggest and most powerful companies in the world to become even bigger and more powerful?

Why? I can only see this being extremely bad for everyone apart from Amazon.

I think Amazon should be getting split up not encouraged to grow bigger.

It's already single handedly pretty much killed hundreds of thousands of businesses.

From your comments in housing i did not expect you to be a communist suggesting all this regulation and government interfere.

Change your name to Comrade Sonny, i think.

Given what they did to twitch I would say no, the effort to defeat adblockers on that platform combined with forced adverts lasting over 90 seconds would kill any growth potential.

Unlikely to happen - in a situation like this an established/first mover presence is close to impossible to shift unless they either do something that alienated their audience or someone managed to do something that was truly innovative and an advancement on what YT offers (many have tried but failed). Just trying to copy YT even with a few gimmicks thrown in isn't enough.

Anyone remember the time that Google tried to oust Facebook with GooglePlus

It's where peadophiles hang out & create "challenges" for young teens, mostly girls, to show as much flesh as possible. It works because of the massive shift amongst the younger generations to narcissictic behaviour. They all think it'll make them famous.

There's no real deterrent for peados on the platform as being caught by 'moderators' only leads to a one week ban. (LINK - Sorry, paywalled but you can see enough)

Is that recently though? Sometimes Youtube changes things so it doesn't work until the list is updated.

It certainly does work at the moment.

Started I think about 1-2 months ago.

Every time it got circumvented within days twitch changed stuff to get ads through again, a decision was made to get these ads through, and 2 days ago I had 3 rolling 30 second ads had to wait for to start watching a stream.

I can't see any reason why youtube would ever not be relevant, it's pretty perfect as it is.
suggested videos and search algorithms are terrible in my experience.

always wants to suggest stuff I watched years ago like they expect me to forget I ever watched them, or spams me with stuff I would never watch.

on searches I tend to see the same channel appearing over and over again near the top of the lists even if it's barely relevant just because they want to promote someone so hard

I agree and it looks like soon if nothing changes it will kill my local town :mad:
It's already dead like most towns/cities, they just didn't get buried yet

there's only so many gambling and pound shops that a high street can have and with few other shops to tempt people they won't last long either
