could have bought a car, but spent it on my 'puter!

Fox why did you buy a BMW when you could get where you wanted in a sub-£1k car?

Completely different. Were my point 'Why did you spend that on a PC when you could have got a Duron 1Ghz' it would have been a fair question, but it isn't, so it isn't.

There is a huge perceivable difference between a £1k car and a BMW. The same cannot be said of a Q6600 and a 8800GTX versus an E6700 and an 8800GTS.

Remind me again which games really take advantage of a Quad Core CPU?

its easy to fall into the trap.. I'm looking to build a new main rig, C2D.. but why go for a C2D when C2Q's are not much more expensive.. i'll just have this graphics card, that hard drive, this ram etc and before you know it you have a bill for £1000... Which i wouldnt mind paying if my next upgrade was a huge technological leap, like upgrading an XP1600 to a overclocked Core2Quad.. but what i'm really waiting for is viable solid state hard drives, I'm hoping my current home entertainment setup will last long enough to get that, at which point i'll upgrade the whole pc, my tv to a big HD LCD, prob a new surround sound hifi, etc all in one go :D

in short spnding a grand on a pc is fine imo as long as it isnt too often, or you can afford it easily.. some people spend more.. and regularly.. just have a look through these forums.. I bet there are more £2000 pcs here than you'd think.. and pcs that get a couple of new graphics cards etc regularly
