Could I do better?

That Asus board will take the cheap 4100, and can take any of AMD's CPUs including the 8 core 8320 -- hopefully it'll take the next generation when AMD releases it next year. That's why I wouldn't skimp on the board, as the cheap ones struggle even with an FX-6300. The Intel board can take any Sandybridge/Ivy processor, but the board's old tech now.

He could get a Z68 B Grade for 35 quid.
Saying it's old tech is a bit of a stretch, the AMD boards are just rehashes of their older chipsets and to be perfectly honest, it's older tech than the Z68 in terms of what's actually there.

AMD has no native PCI-E 3.0 (Which is one reason I think SR will push onto a new socket so that AMD can make a baseline)

Z68 B grade is all right.

Old tech more along the lines of a dead platform. The Sabertooth AM3+ has 16x/16x PCI-E 3.0, not sure why the others haven't.

That'll be down to third party stuff Asus have done, and only recently too.
So it'll have latency added on, like the NF200 chips for 16x bandwidth over 8x.

Whereas 1155? You throw an Ivy in any 1155 board and the primary lane's PCI-E 3.0, then depending how they've done the other lanes, they will either be PCI-E 2.0/3.0

Which is why I think AMD will go for a new socket, sort their chipsets out, 990FX is just a 890FX rebadge, which itself is pretty much a 790FX rebadge.

These threads often go off on tangent discussions ;)

I'd say the FX-4100 / 7770 with a mind to upgrade the CPU at some point.

I'd go FX6300 with the 7770.

Would last a fair chunk longer.

Or find a second hand i5 somewhere with the 7770.

Shame you can't use the members market.

That's all fine and really good for the money. As Martini said the FX-6300 is better if you're able to put up extra now.
