And to be honest, those of us that have ninja pc's won't really notice that much difference in speed anyway

Vista started off as absolutely terrible for me, it took a long time for it to get patched up to being reasonable enough to use for work, whereas Win7 has not given me any issues whatsoever since it's install, performance wise it's about on a par with a fully patched Vista but it just seems to work and the windows shake I thought would be a novelty is actually something I use a lot.

You're all gonna have to move from XP one day anyway, when MS stop releasing security updates for it and hardware companies stop making drivers. Might as well make it sooner rather than later
you would think being stuck on DX9 would be enough to force any serious pc users to migrate tbh.
More of a business concern than home users, home users who are that concerned will upgrade if they haven't already.
That's the real kick to force people to buy the next operating system. Not just drivers but other program requirements, making them insist on the latest OSs.
Mind you, if all you do on your computer is fairly mundane stuff, word processing, spreadsheets, perhaps watching movies, no games besides minesweeper and you're happy with security, there's nothing to make you move at all.
All of what you said is true but there are a load of smaller setting that are effected by these things that I can't change, I mean call me picky because I am lol. I like everything perfect, and atm having to look into great depth to adjust little fiddly settings that should have just followed over is a bit annoying. If it wasnt for the fact I can't use all my ram and the outdated support I think I know what I'd be using
. I always get my nod32 or advast running before I do anything any way and they have all the program change detection etc. Might move Uac up 1 notch and see how it goes from there. As long as it doesnt pop up with 2 or 3 different messages saying are u sure are u really really sure kinda rubbish then I think i can cope

Why? When windows7 boot up in 30 seconds and looks gorgeous compared to XP. Runs all my apps without breaking a sweat and plays all my games without problems.

I think all they needed to do was use windows 7 gutts made it look shiny and use aero and kept the xp style structure, would have been my idea of perfect. Personally think its also making it more user family friendly which kinda takes the edge off it from xp at least u could be dangerous with that and not get a slap and sent to the naughty stall by the UAC. and yes i know u can turn it off, but its offically an OS for the OAP's and not power users.

It's not just about annoying prompts - it's about stopping programs from being able to do things they shouldn't do without permission. Really important defence against malware. On a dual boot with Vista and XP, everything ran so much better on XP.. Nothing ran smooth on Vista.. Then I upgraded my hardware to a Q6600, 4gig ram, P45 mobo and Vista ran perfect... I still have dual boot, but really there's no need. Vista is just as quick with the right hardware..
My biggest gripe with Vista is File Transfer.. why is it painfully slow compared to XP ? You need some real patience when it comes to Vista file transfer.. Plus there's no consistancy.. Sometimes you but in a flash drive and it say 15mins for a gig transfer, another time it may only say 3mins.. XP seemed to have a much better handle on that..
Not tried Windows 7 yet, but i would welcome hearing if Microsoft have fixed the painfully slow vista file transfer.

Win 7 does a very nice job of classic mode so you can have xp looks with oober goodness
UAC beats all forms of anti-virus about 10x over. But then, it's not hard to beat anti-virus. They're ****.

I like XP still. It's very quick, certainly more noticebly quicker than Vista. XP is also compatible with more programs (certainly older ones) and for that reason remains very useful. Also DX9 isn't bad and a lot of DX9 games look better than DX10 ones anyway, but that's more because of the designer than DirectX itself.
However Windows 7 is faster than Vista, more noticeably on older computers (such as my laptop) than newer ones, but the speed improvement is there nonetheless. Also Windows 7 is a great little OS, so on my main PC it will go.
Vista is terribly underrated, but that is because it got off to a bad start pre-sp1 as things didn't work right on it and people had to get used to the massive changes in how Windows does things (arguably for the better). Vista is also pretty stable (XP is not that bad though, try going back to Win9x...), but at the same time Vista can be sluggish and needlessly resource hungry, something that Windows 7 has improved upon.
Basicly, I used Vista on my main PC briefly, but at the time I had a P4 running at 3.4Ghz and the two didn't get along, therefore I hated it. My current PC ran Vista briefly as well (Can be seen in the link in my sig) and it was much better, but some programs still had problems, so I went back to XP, which also felt smoother. Windows 7 has come along though and brings Vista's improvements and closer responsiveness to XP, which is good enough for me. For the old games however I suppose I'll need to VM XP or use XP Mode or even Dual Boot.
