Could my mobo be dying?

If you getting disk right errors on the same disk… I would try the drive in a different port or m.2 socket.. but the drive is probably the problem.

Okay so, the PC is now completely dead, won't post, won't do anything at all, I've take the psu out and tried jumping it, the fan does turn and it seems to be working.

If I plug in JUST the motherboard and nothing else it's dead as a door nail. Still absolutely nothing, I'm going to start pulling components and trying with nothing plugged in next.

Okay, I've removed every component bar the cpu and still got nothing. The only thing I've seen that looks out of the ordinary is the 980 pro ssd almost looks like it has moisture on it? This was the ssd with the disk write errors in steam.

Going to steal the psu out my fiancé's pc and see if that'll get it to post next.

where is the SSD in relation to the cooler?
it literally dose... lol, but moisture doesn't just come out of thin air.

if possible can we see a photo of the system and said moisture

It wasn't like water, it was almost greasy but it was directly where the thermal pad was so i think it might just be residue from that.

I've tried powering up the motherboard again, out of the case with no cpu, and after completely removing the CMOS battery instead of using the cmos clear button, still got nothing so o guess it's a dead board!

While you sort a new motherboard out, get testing that SSD out. If you think the SSD has got liquid of some sort on it, maybe upload a photo or two of the drive for us to check.

If you have neat isopropyl alcohol, use that and a soft brush to try and clean the drive up. Electrical contact cleaner will work too, it just depends what you have to hand. Don't be afraid to give the drive a good wash with either of these, they'll soon evaporate if you place them somewhere warm (not hot).

With the SSD being suspect, I'd test it in a USB enclosure if you can. This way at least the drive should only be able to take out the enclosure. Failing that, try it in a motherboard. As long as you've cleaned up the liquid with alcohol or contact cleaner, you should be okay.
