• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Could use some expert help with a bricked GTX 680

Maybe on low brightness, I'd say that applies to any screen.

On full brightness though, they are piercingly bright, more than enough when outside.

I don't get why I wouldn't be able to use it outside or write texts though.

You don't get light hearted humour then...

Greg is hard to understand sometimes, you just gotta take him with a pinch of salt lol.

Hes snidy/sarcastic sometimes but most his posts are decent, i see youve been having a war with him on most threads.

He has a few wars with people its just his nature to wind people up.

I am lost with that :)

For once, I have nothing to say...I am lost for words.

Read through this, and its bloody interesting but there's a lot of over-reacting and over-defensiveness going on.

Of course its all subjective. If I won the lottery tomorrow I wouldn't be cooking and cleaning myself, I'd be paying someone else to do it regardless of the money I might save doing it myself though.

What I would say though with the laptop situation; given that most people here can build a computer from scratch, they probably have enough competency to disassemble and reassemble a laptop. a soldering kit + replacement part would be quite cheap, lets say under £20. Worse case scenario is you would have to pay for a new motherboard, depending on the laptop, lets say £80.

It's a gamble, but one that I've taken before and think it's worthwhile for the experience if nothing else.

Fair play to the OP, willing effectively to dice with death, probably even more so than those de-lidding their I5/I7s! I wish you all the best. It's not something I'd do though.

Just a word about this thread, one thing i liked about the OCUK forums compared to others it was pretty helpful people helping others out and very rarely get flaming, this thread has proved me wrong.
This is the most imature, petty thread i have seen on here, just let it go you have hi-jacked this thread.

Forum police have busted it, time to close up ;)

Good advice to the OP :)

On a serious note and back to the OPs question in the first post, He should repair it himself for £35 up north whilst using a Samsung Note 2 in some smart jeans and scalpels are optional. He should drive to the GFX card but make sure he has knowledge on how to replace a tyre and wheel in case it gets a bit of slate from a roof in it.

After doing this quite simple/hard Soldering job, he should be more carefull in the first place and none of this discussion would have taken place :p

Can I just point out, laptop repairs aside, the size of these components that the opening poster is looking to get repaired, just in case some posters haven't actually thought just how small these parts are.

There you go just to put things in perspective, these surface mount parts are tiny and they have other parts in close proximity.

Myself I wouldn't try to do it myself, and I spent 5 years (all be it 25 years ago) making up pcbs for a living. Especially not on a £350 graphics card.

Must admit I did not expect the topic to expand that much! I will be more careful in the future :)

I have found a colleague that has experience in this so won't be attempting it myself - I am OK with this not succeeding too but if it does succed - I then have another problem. If my card gets fixed I will have three GTX 680 - since I have a surround monitor setup with three Dell 24" monitors its extremely tempting to go for triple SLI! But that means new PSU, new case and an additional waterblock - good thing Christmas is coming up. Time to open another thread on this and see where that one goes.....

No ill take one 680 before you break it again, this will prevent greg from changing a tire with nasa equipment thats used to change moon buggy tires as theres no other tools in essex which can except £35 an hour mechanics.
