Hi all.

Could someone tell me the name of a device which i could backup the contents of my CF card as i'm going to China next year and i'm really not too keen on taking my laptop with me. Budget isn't really too much of a question.

Cheers, themask70.

Just echoing what Colin said. I saw this post before I went into Manchester for a few hours predicting someone would advise removing the link. Didn't expect someone to have done so and the link to still be there.

I use an Archos AV420, great little device, I think its mine has the 3.5" colour screen, and can view jpegs. Only downside, is that there is no RAW viewing capability.

I went with option B to Malaysia recently, which was to spend more on memory cards, and then take a bunch of blank DVDs with me. There are usually plenty of internet cafes and hotels with DVD writers. I'm not now convinced of the idea of an external drive unless you're really planning on blowing over 2000 shots a day.

went for a flashtrax XT, does the job perfectly although the screen is pretty poor.

This is what i did when i went travelling for 6 weeks. Dont forget if you buy a storage device thingy, you're putting all of your shots into one place. Meaning if you lost it, or break it, or it gets corrupted, or whatever.. you've lost everything. If you lose a DVD with however many shots on it -- at least you havent lost them all. Plus DVDs are fairly robust!

The Epson P2000 is the best screen and also reads RAW.

There is a P3000 out now too, so maybe that will have fixed some of the small bugs in the P2000 software, like 8.3 DOS file names.

I bought the Nexto OTG CF, great for what it is and very fast copying. Won't show you the pics but you can browse directories etc. Has internal batteries as well so can use it out in the field.

I bought a laptop, I got a 15.4" screen dell with ultrasharp. Though looking back one of their cheaper small laptops would have done.

It's useful for so many more things than storage when on holiday etc.

Mine is quite a good spec for £740.

Good luck.

Great tool, especially on a shoot like Weddings where you can preview photos on a much larger screen immediately. Shame about the cost thou !

lol, that's quite a jump from a £100 storage device though isnt it?!

Yes, but I originally bought a "cinema disk" backup two or three years ago. It was fine for purely backing up but after a while I ended up getting a laptop anyway, I wish I had just bought a small laptop at the beginning. My cinema disk is gathering dust on my desk now.

A laptop is great for storage, reviewing images, photoshop, dvd's and with the increasing number of free wifi hotspots on holiday it's really handy to have.

I've got a pd70x fitted with an 80gb hd that i could be tempted to part with....not sure how much its worth. I've only used it twice. Bought it for weddings and I now end up just not touching a full card and keeping it in the car instead..

The Archos Gmini 402 can now be picked up for £150. It too has a CF slot and it's smaller and a bit cheaper than the AV420 (and doubles up as a pretty good mp3 player too...)

LINK GONE <-- thought it was just a review site :p

Get one of these mate.

Can be had for around £15 then just bang in a 2.5" id of any flavour. Sure it doesn't preview them, but tbh my camera has a better display than anything sub £150 will have easily.

Has only one button and makes a unique folder every time, so you never overwrite acidently. Insert card -> press play -> done. If you want a basic image dump it's a easy bet. My one lived in my backpack for my bike ride (see sig) and I used it everyday to offload the pics, so I guess it must be fairly good at absorbing shock too. :)

Or get a laptop :D
