Council Tax

Special Constables in Southampton as of April 2010 get a 100% property discount.

So on top of housing priority, you get a full council tax exemption? Maybe I should become a police officer, hard work but at least I won't lose my job randomly and become homeless every 2 years :/

Ah well, I have the student exemption for now...

Woah... hold it ..

Seek what is this about an agreement with the landlord...

whaaaa?

Can I get out of paying council tax?

Just to clarify, 5 Bedroomed house, me paying council tax and 4 full time students

is it a HMO or does one person rent the house ?

no idea if this matters but if one person rents it then the discussion doesn't matter in your case

council tax is a rip off they cant even collect the bins every week now, despite it going up every year, we all know we are taxed every which way, but sometimes you just have to pay up no matter how unfair it is

I can't really tell you anything more that I haven't written in previous posts, but basically you are technically not personally responsible for paying the council tax bill - your landlord is.

So you only have to pay if you have a private agreement to do so with your landlord. However, in most cases this will be mentioned in your tenancy agreement, or though some verbal agreement before you moved into the property, so you will probably still have to pay.

Just go down to your local council offices and explain the situation to them, I'm sure they'll be happy to give you the full details.

The willingness of the public (i.e. us) to break laws so freely, dodge tax and general inconsideration mirrors all the wrongs with modern society.

No, having 40% of your hard earned money being taken away from you by a government and given to those too idle to work is what's wrong with society.

more than enough taxes/benefits are based on income and in a very disproportianate manner

Nothing wrong with all taxes being based on income and scrapping vat and council tax. Stops council tax putting retired/disabled people out of their home because they can't afford it.
