As a big "FU" to Infinity Ward and Activision, I am on the lookout for a typical PC shooter.

I allready own both along with BF2 which I have reinstalled this morning.

Now, I have only played CS: Source a few times at LAN partys and had great fun.

I am now wanting to get into one or the other but keep reading things which pretty much say "CSS is simpler"? Is this so?

The main point people mention is the lack of recoil in CSS compared to 1.6 thus making headshots easier?

Gameplay above eye candy for me so visuals not an issue. 1.6 reminds me of my HL1 days so all good :)

I have a few people at work interested as well in Counterstrike (about 10 of us) so what are your thoughts?

I have played both and to be honest, couldnt tell much difference now reading all this stuff has made me paranoid.

I realise this is an emotive topic for some so keep it clean guys.

Advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Play Source, the only people left on 1.6 are those who take it super seriously and you'll do nothing but get shot to bits for 6 months until you've put about 500 hours into it and got to the same standard.

Source is a bit different, obviously everyone still on 1.6 will say it's too easy etc. but IMO this is more down to the fact they've got so used to exactly how 1.6 works that any slight change in dynamics drops them down a level comparitively and they say its now 'too easy' for everyone else to match them.

I did see a vid showing that recoil is less on source, well it made it look pathetic compared to 1.6.

If it makes a difference, would be playing with mates on a private server, not public.

Source still the way to go?

I would, it's the sort of issue that you wouldn't even have given second thought to had you just jumped into Source and it's something i've only ever seen die hard 1.6 fans make an issue of.

Source is easy mode CS. Less tricks to learn, easier to aim - generally more new player friendly. 1.6 is the real Counter-Strike, and is a far better game, but will be very hard for a new player to break in to at this stage. The 1.6 community is generally a bit more mature as well, less 'OMG IM GOING CPL' 13 year olds.

Up to you if you want an easy ride or a more rewarding one imo.

It really, really isn't.

As your post proves.

It's full of people who think they're better than you and will instantly start whining about noobs and other such **** within seconds of the game starting.

The general age is older, I'd put some good money on that. When Source was still quite new me and a few friends went over and did quite well for ourselves, in teh end we ended up going back to 1.6 after getting knocked out of a competition due to TERRIBLE reg and bugged PoV's (guns sticking out of places they shouldnt, shadows bugging etc.). The final straw was the fact that everyone else in the community seemed to be <16.

Source.

Hit reg is fine if the server is set up probably (which most aren't I might add), cs1.6 is a bit more forgiving to the server admins in that respect.

1.6 suffers from more elitists and therefore is not something you want as an Introduction to Counterstrike. Also the jaggy graphics etc are horrible. Although not the most up to date graphics, at least CSS is smooth. Also Mother May's posts are the typical attitude of a 1.6 player, so up to you really.

Coming from someone who has played hundreds (thousands) of hours of each, for you as a new player, I would recommend Source. It's way more accessible. As someone has already pointed out, you will get your ass absolutely handed to you for a very long time on 1.6.

Source also has a bigger competitive scene these days.

1.6 is undoubtedly the better game but thinking about having to start from scratch and relearn how to play that with zero knowledge makes my head hurt.

As I said, will be playing with friends only on our own server.

I have no intention of going into the wild :)

Not sure if this makes a difference between 1.6 or Source though?

Source, before xmas i bought 1.6 just to see what it was like and it was awful, all the building were huge i felt like a midgit man compared with how source feels. Source was a better game, also more players.
