So far the only ones i can think of are the Hyundai Coupe / Mazda Mx-5

The Hyundai is nice imo, though people seem to think Hyundai are a 'bad car make', if they exist anymore.

And the mx-5, ive been told it simply a hairdressers car, what other choices do i have?

The Hyundai have supposedly excellent build quility if you believe there radio adverts.
Go for the MX-5, also 'supposedly' the most fun car at legal road speeds.

The Hyundai coupe is a very nice car. Several of my teachers have them in school both new and older model and they are delighted with them.

As for the 'bad car make' comment. IMO that is complete nonsence. Several members of my family own Hyundai's and they swear by them. One example is my brothers 1999 Atoz (probably cheapest model of Hyundai ever made), he hasn't had one problem what so ever with it and it's covered over 70k. So the coupe is definately worth a look. Another good thing is that the Hyundai has a back seat, although it may have bad head/leg room you can still take 2-3 passengers if you need which I don't believe you can do in an mx-5.

MG TF 135. Stupidly cheap right now. The earlier MGFs are probably more in your price range though.

No one on this forum seems to like them and will say HGF and hairdressers cars and bad this and that. Definitely worth a look though.

Not to mention an interior pulled out of the bottom of a Cornflakes box, horrible ride, terrible build quality and a twitchy rear end.

I drove one for a week and hated it. It's cheap for a good reason which is that it's a horrendous car. Two of the guys at work had the 135s until they slid off at roundabouts and wrapped them around trees.

Test drive an MGTF, then test drive an MX-5 and decide for yourself.

MX5 without a doubt. It's got a decent boot, great looks, a superb chassis, pretty good performance stock, convertible (and you can get a hardtop for it too), fairly cheap to insure, bullet proof engine (over engineered really), pretty decent cabin space for a car in it's class, nothing else really touches it for a roadster bar maybe the mr2 roadster for performance and handling, though it looses out on practicality. Not a hairdresser's car, though I do see a lot of girls driving them :o - they are a great fun little sports car (something which I've always wanted) and very affordable.

What about a BMW 5 Series?

You could.... weld the rear doors shut and... transplant a 1.6 litre engine, then it'd fit? No, wait, I'll get my coat :p

The Hyundai will keep on going and going if it's been looked after properly. Although to be fair i'm sure the Mazda would aswell. If you need 2 rear seats and lot's of boot space go for the Hyundai. If you don't, get the MX-5.

Not helping! Make up your mind! :P

So the Mx-5 has the general approval of the board then? wouldnt be a bad car to own as my first after my parents :p

Cheap quote of £2k for the 1.8i also

Will be buying the car in around march, i suppose i should organise test drives

Well if you also want some change from the insurance run a quick quote for a Hyundai ;) You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Oh and err, noticing your age, do you think a RWD car is the best option? Just a thought, not my place to judge your driving ability :)
