any idea if anyone has put a bike engine into one of these? or how tunable the stock lump is !?

massive!

"The Sport gives a real performance boost! You get the full Classique specification plus a works-built CappuccinoSPORT engine which includes Metal Head Gasket 68mm, Forged Piston Kit 67mm (698cc), Crank Shaft Bearing and a complete Turbo upgrade with new larger intercooler. Power increases from the standard 63 bhp engine up to 120bhp (0-60 mph acceleration in 5.7 seconds). "

japanese kei series 659cc engines are a best kept secret. my own daihatsu has a 659cc turbo, and 4wd, 0 to 60 is around 9 seconds, top speed 100, cracking mpg too. the engine used in the suzuki the F6A is a very tough and tunable unit

just add, by japanese law kei cars are limited to 64 bhp, quite often they produce way over or are highly restricted, a good exhaust and airbox system on the capp will give a 15 to 20 % increase in power before you even mess with the turbo :)

Not to mention an interior pulled out of the bottom of a Cornflakes box, horrible ride, terrible build quality and a twitchy rear end.

I drove one for a week and hated it. It's cheap for a good reason which is that it's a horrendous car. Two of the guys at work had the 135s until they slid off at roundabouts and wrapped them around trees.

Test drive an MGTF, then test drive an MX-5 and decide for yourself.

Still worth a look on this budget. You can get a whole lot of MGF for this budget.

And oh my god, if you're considering a suzuki crappucino then good luck to you.

Random suggestion, mk1 mr2, shouldn't be too bad to insure (£833 at 21, 1 years ncb and one partial blame accident), 0-60 in around 7.8, comfortably under £5k (£2k should get you a fairly mint condition one) and lovely handling :)

On the Hyundai Coupe. Be careful of earlier models, they were known for having bad clutches. It has been fixed in the '04 and 05' models but earlier than that, if it hasnt already been replaced, your likely going to need to

This only affected Gen 3's though, so nothing he'll have to worry about :)

He has 6k to spend, why would he want a G reg banger?

old doesn't have to mean bad, they're brilliant fun little cars. You can great examples for peanuts. Depends how you quantify 'better' as well really - they feel more like a go kart to drive than a roomy car, and that means more fun in my mind.

It was just a suggestion that you surely can see some merit in? It's pretty much one of the fastest best handling cars you can have that are ABI Group 13 or under, and may well be a possible mind-changer for Morthoseth. I'm sure you can let him consider it! :p

I'd say it fits his criteria better than both your suggestions Fox,

Save some money on the initial cost, if he buys one with the rear arches already done rust isn't really an issue, and reliability is as far as my limited experience goes a non-issue...

And just cause a car isn't less than 10 years old doesn't instantly make it a banger.

As i said, it's a suggestion that meets all three of his criteria in the initial post...

Sorry but at a 16-17 year old MR2 is, whatever sort of spin you want to put on it, an old car. It's going to have old car problems, and you are going to look like you are driving around in an old car.

Now, it may be a future classic and it may be a good car but it's hardly the right car for somebody who has about £6k to spend and is currently considering things like the Hyundai Coupe.

The very fact that you suggest buying one where the 'rear arches already done' suggests they are not going to be like owning a non-ancient car.

the beauty of them is though, that if you do get a good one with the rust issue fixed (and there are a lot of good cars out there,) then there is really nothing much else that does go wrong with them. They are pretty much bullet proof. I'm actually a fan of the Hyundai Coupe, but I'd much rather spend 2k on a brilliant MR2 than 6K on a Hyundai Coupe.

They do look old - that I won't argue with. Anyway, it's an idea for him to consider. They are plain simple sporty coupes, with a lot less to go wrong than many modern cars.

I never tried to claim it wasn't an old car, but what are these so called 'old car problems' other than the rear arches rusting they are generally known as being very reliable...

He's also considering an MX-5 which is quite similar in terms of practicality and performance to the mr2...
