So my parents car was officially written off today and been told by the supplier of the courtesy car (Evans Halshaw) that we need to hand it back after 3 days of the write off being announced. But the guy said can return it Monday.
As far as I know the settlement may not being even close to being paid/settled, but I do admit that I don't really know. Either way a weekend is not really long enough to go car hunting.

Any suggestions in the scenario? Our last one I remember having the car for a week or two.
Or is it a case of as soon as the value of the write off is paid and money is cleared there is nothing that can be done? Just looking to aid the parents, apart from myself going out and buying a £500 banger.

Then you are the mercy of your insurer. What you are entitled to from them is a matter between you and them and will be outlined in your policy documentation I'd imagine.

If your parents could be deemed to be at fault it's a good thing to give the hire car back as it could well be very expensive.

If its been provided by the OP's parents insurers it's unlikely to be anything particularly expensive as they will be aware it could be them paying for it.

It's actually amazing how many insurance policies don't offer long-term hire cars in the case of total loss.
If your car is damaged and off the road for a couple of weeks you'll probably get a loan car for the whole period.
But if it's deemed a write-off that's usually the end of the loan car - even if a settlement hasn't yet been paid.

I know that when I renewed my insurance last year one of the "perks" they added to my policy for free was up to 60 days hire car in case of total loss.
Fingers crossed I'll never need it...but nice to know its there.

Aye mine was "UPTO" 28 days, paid extra to have teh enhanced courtesy car on my insurance premium, they delivered the hire car and popped the keys thru letterbox whilst I was at work.

Had I not refused the car and asked them to pick it back up then I woudl've had it for all of 2 whole days. Once the insurance company advised them of the write off they wanted it back. good job I refused the car or my £60 damage waiver wouldve been a complete waste lol. That was with Admiral.

I've got the extended hire car cover with Admiral too but I don't get half of what you said.

Sounded good after reading the first bit but don't get why you refused it?

Mine states up to 14 days, or 48 hours after the settlement cheque is issued. What it didn't state was they could send out a cheque for whatever amount they fancied, whenever they wanted, without telling me, then phone me up at 10pm and say they wanted the car back within 12 hours.

Needless to say I told them they could either collect it from where I was (happened to be about 500 miles away) and pay for my train back, or I could bring it back in 48hrs. Strangely enough they decided that they would give me the 48hrs notice.

Unfortunately it seems that car insurance is a government condoned con... sorry, that should have been government required con....

You'd prefer insurance to be optional?

No I'd prefer it not to be such a con.

Unfortunately, while with most services/products, you have the choice to not use them if they don't provide the level of service you would like, if you need to drive, you have absolutely no choice but to put up with being shafted at every opportunity.

It's quite normal for an insurance company to withdraw the courtesy car after a car is declared a write off. I remember this happening with my mother's Renault 19 when it was written off in the 90s, she had to buy a cheap runabout.

Thats what I am offering for my parents. I buy a cheap (most likely) mark 1 focus. And I keep it afterwards, as long I am happy with the car in the first place.

Looked decent, was an new 1l astra.
Absolutely shocking to drive tho, just didn't feel safe driving it, seemed to have no pull even in first getting out of junctions nevermind roundabouts was entertaining.
